8th KRI is an unknown quantity at this point
A bit slow introducing myself - I am Chris Attwood, I am researching the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars from June 1944 until VE Day.
My interest in this regiment at this time started a few years back when I became interested in how my Uncle Trooper George Attwood had died.

My Dad had very little information, having been called up soon after his brother's death. My Dads mother had died some time before and his Dad died died six weeks after he got the news about Goerge, so my Dad went of "To War" leaving nothing much behind, when demobbed he signed up and spent the next 30 odd years as a regular, never having the chance to find out the details of his brother's death.

I have learned a great deal, mainly that the official date of death may be wrong.

It is my intention to compile a "narrative" of the Regiment's activities from June 1944 untill VE day, and along the way gather anectdotes and knowledge about the (extra)"ordinary" men who took part, from their perspective rather than the well discussed and researched strategy.

Some of my research is on my web site at http://freepages.military.rootsweb.com/~at...thkri/index.htm

I wish you well with your quest.

Apart from noting that they are listed as "Divisional troops" under 7th Armoured Div in the place normally given to reconnaisance regiments in the OOB in Max Hastings' "Overlord", I probably can't help you much, but if you are in a position to share more of what you know, it may trigger a few "lines of enquiry".

Chris, thank you for our family's service to Crown and Country, welcome to the boards, and good luck with your quest. You might want to try Ellis, the British Official History.

Welcome, Chris!
I salute your family's service and sacrifice. Best of luck with your search, there are quite a few very knowledgeable persons hereabouts.

Ellis is the author of the British Official History: Victory in the West. That should have a lot of answers about 8th KRI.

Out of curiousity, as I could use a copy, how much did it run for?

There seem to be a number of editions -the earliest published in 1953, hardback for around £170 to the later paperbacks for a few pounds (depending on whether they are new or secondhand). The earlier editions dont have sources etc the later editions have been updated and amended with sources, bibliography and index, so unless you are a book collector the later editions would seem to be much better value for research.
