Partisan Memories

One of my grandads fought as a partisan in Italy in WW2. I have a very interesting anecdote i will never forget;

My Grandadīs unit was specialized in ambush; their main aim was to destroy axis convoys supplying troops in Montecassino behind enemy lines. Once, they were ready to ambush a convoy, but they realized the trucks were being followed by Tiger Tanks and some Waffen SS units!!!!. When they realised this, they started climbing downwards the hill, awaiting a bullet. When my Grandad turned to see why he wasnt hit, he saw a group of Germans laughing at him in the top of the hill. The Krauks forgave his life!!!!!!

Can you tell us more about where Grandad fought as a Partisan?
How old was he at the time?
Had he been in Italian Army before becoming a Partisan?

My grandad was quite young-like 19 20. He was not a member of the Italian army, but he hid in a wardrobe for months to avoid being taken to the army. He bitterly opposed mussolinis fascist regime even before war and more when he started. He decided to fight agaisnt mussolini forming a partisan cell. When he returned from Cassino and the war ended he realized that his house was destroyed and most of his family dead, he also knew that most of his friends that fought with the Italian army in that town were sent to the Russian Front- none of them returned...He went to Argentina and formed his family there when after he returned to his hometown in North Italy, where the only thing left in the town was the name. He also told that after the war a tree was planted for each one who died in the war-he told me there was a tree column kilometers long....

He also recieved a diplomma ( singed by Harold Alexander ) and a medal i dont remember its name yet
