You chose dishonor and you will have war." (Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.) What did the Australians do in ww2 and other conflicts? ![]() ![]() ![]() | At the risk of going off thread (but then again, I'm ALWAYS going off thread !) I'd like to pass on another strange "coincidence" that has happened to me. Many years ago my wife and I had a lovely week in Stockholm and, in keeping with a tradition we had established over the years, I bought her a gold charm to hang on her bracelet. The charm, in the shape of the Swedish royal crown, was a particular favourite of my wife and so she chose to hang it on a separate small chain on her wrist. The short story is that she lost it and was desolate so I wrote to the original jeweller's shop in Stockholm to ask if I could replace it. My letter was returned "address unknown" and so we resigned ourselves to its loss. Many weeks later, when returning home from a shopping expedition, I had just got out of my car when something caught my eye. It was the charm, still laying on the driveway exactly where it must have fallen off the bracelet and, even more amazingly for a piece of soft gold, was completely unmarked !. Ah me.... yet another one of life's unsolved mysteries ![]()
