Hi all,

This is a bit off topic for me, but I was wondering
if anyone could help.

I was given a PC game Desert Rats v Afrika Korps
by a friend as he new my interest in in this particular
campaign.

Let me tell you before we go any further that I am
no computer whiz kid but I can push a few buttons
and get where I want to get in the end (Bring back
my old ZX81 any day).

Well I read the minimum requirements and I have
plenty of everything. I managed to get the game
going but admit it was a bit slow, which surprised
me because like I've said I have plenty of everything.
I thought I'd try and reduce the graphics etc... to
speed up the game, this worked for a bit but now
my computer crashes and goes back to my desktop.
Any ideas?

I have run DirectX diagnostics and found no
problems, I have run the usual disk cleaning
programmes, which seemed to speed things up
at the start until I started getting the crashes.
I would just give up but what I have managed
to play of the game was really good so I've
got the bug.

Are there any computer experts on the forum
who my be able to help me?

Regards
Kieron

Are you running Windows XP with SP2? I have found that the security aspects of SP2 blocks some gaming features unless you unblock them; I found this with MOH when I first installed SP2 and have to update every time I add a new game. I don't have this one; I tried the demo and wasn't very impressed... I prefer Combat Mission Akrika Corps.

Hi,

Just jouned the forum and this was the first post I read. I haven't played yhe game myself but have checked it out as a demo. There's a dedicated website for this game with a thriving forum. They may be able to help.

SP2 is really annoying. It disabled some of the main features of my McAfee computer security until McAfee told me how to deal with it.

Hi Kieron - SP2 is Service Pack 2, the recent Windows XP upgrade that added a firewall etc. I am lucky as I have had no major problems with it, save this particular problem with some games, but which were easily fixable. I am on my laptop at the mo (Not XP), so will check when I am back at my desktop how I dealt with this problem.

Have you also checked you have the latest version of Direct X, which is a graphics programme used in many games. I suspect you will need v.8 or 9 for this game?

Hi Paul,

Right...I have now gone to the extremes of removing SP2 software
from my computer aswell as Norton firewall and Norton anti-virus
software, but it still isn't working... B#*$ŁY computers

I am now starting to through my rattles out of my pram
please, please all I want to do is play my game.

My kids now think this is very amusing and Michelle (wife) thinks
I am the biggest kid in the house...she just dosn't understand, when
a man wants to role play 'Monty' he's just got to do it.

I think I should give and play hangman with the kids before I get
anymore grey hairs. I think my computer gaming days are
numbered.

Thanks for everything

regards
Kieron

Removing all that stuff was a bit drastic - I would re-install it if, especially if you are on broadband, otherwise your PC will be at risk.

Are you 100% sure your PC specs are up to it? And have you checked the Direct X specs.

Hi Paul,

I did try un-installing the games software and re-installing
it, but that didn't work either.

My computer spec is AMD Athlon XP 2600 2.0 Ghz
Nvidia Geforce 4 MX graphics 64mb allocated

I have more than 1 gb free and DirectX 9 installed.

I just don't know what to do next, any ideas?

regards
Kieron
