I would say that the best PC Games I have ever played (at a tactical level) for realism are:

COMBAT MISSION (SERIES) - truely superb
CLOSE COMBAT (SERIES) - very good

Both of these have an Eastern Front title.

I have not personally played this game, but it looks excellent:

THEATRE OF WAR - YouTube - Theatre of War www.gameprotv.com

I generally do not play 'grand strategy' games eg. regiment, divisions as counters etc. However, i am sure their are some very good titles.

Also, it is worth noting my criteria for a good game rests solely on these criteria:

1. Must be strategy
2. Must pass a good graphics threshold
3. Must be as realistic as possible

There are some games which are very good games with excellent graphics and strategy; but they are only games and do represent the reality of warfare and merely rely on a WW2 theme.

'Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday' is a remarkable game. Best stab I've yet seen at a 'grand strategy' approach to the entire war. It can become mind-bendingly complex in having to deal with military on land, at sea, and in the air along with economic, political, intelligence & production factors, but that complexity is what makes it. A rare game in that it actually teaches/reinforces certain factors about the war's course, such as the severe difficulty of attacking the USSR succesfully, the importance of logistical tails, the necessity of navies to extend military power etc. etc.
It's also very satisfying to attempt things that were never achieved in the actual war, like axis landings on the US mainland, and thankfully the engine and historical data seems so well set up that these counterfactual approaches are as difficult as they should be .

Well worth a go but with the caveat that it can easily turn into one of those 4AM games.

Agreed with VP on this but with one additional caveat: Dont buy this game if you are happily married and would like to continue living with your partner!!!

I would say 4AM, two days later!

Is this game like Age of Empires, at least graphically? I mean, that´s my main reference to strategy games, and since it has given me a ton of pleasantly sleepless hours, I just can imagine what will happen to my life if I ever get my hands on a similar one about ww2.
