Drucius is an unknown quantity at this point
I was reading a memoir some time ago which claimed it was a Typhoon, not a Spitfire. Can't remember which memoir it was for the life of me, mind.

Is this place where Rommel got injured in France? Just outside Normandy or what?

Rommels Accident

But reading the statement of the witness (which I meant to take with me but forgot) the incident was definetly just outside of Livarot. The old road exiting Livarot is straight, before quite a sharp bend which is what I believe was referred to in the witnesses statement, I didn't have time to take photos yesterday, I'll try when I'm next there in June.

I know that doesn't tie up with ATB#8

It would make sense to give a different account of the incident if what Heins says is accurate.
Rommel was a Folk Hero in Germany so his wounds would have been seen to be self inflicted as the result of poor judgement.

Of course this is just supposition, but what had Heins to gain from making the story up.

Unhappy

I'm actually starting to wonder, with all witnesses and participants having now passed away, if the real facts of this incident will ever be known.....

Not everyone who was involved that day is dead, far from it.

Major General Richard Rohmer, retired , was the RCAF Mustang recce pilot who called in a section of two RCAF spitfires, who attacked the HORCH car that Rommel was in.

Charley Fox, the Canadian section leader that day , is very much alive and kicking. To read the webpage that contains his account of that day on July 17th, 1944, at 17:05 hrs, go here.

Rommel Under Attack

Read it and see if the facts fit the known story.

Rommels "Accident"

I feel the facts regarding the incident will always be clouded with doubt.

Heins made his statement not too long after the incident he witnessed and clearly indicates there were two Staff cars. Not one.
