Raf Records

Can anybody help ?

I sent for my uncle's wartime RAF records and they can't be found .
I think that my uncle was called up in September 1939 , but that he went , initially , to the army . He wanted to serve with the RAF and I believe he managed to get himself transferred .
He did serve in the Middle East , possibly Aden , and was a rear gunner for some of that time . Later on he was grounded because of his sight . I do have a photo of him in RAF uniform .

The woman I spoke to at RAF records suggested that he may have served with the RAF , but have actually remained with the army .

Has anyone any ideas or experiences that could throw some light on this mystery ?

Linden

Hello Peter .
He was Gerard Charles Joseph Sharp(e) , born 4th October 1914 . I don't have a service number for him .
I think my father said that they both went to Liverpool , and they may have started out with the Kings Liverpools .
But none of this is certain.
Regards,
Linden

I think sadly without further information, and without knowledge of the correct spelling of name on enlistment, your chances of finding him are slim.

The RAF records have just moved to Disclosures , Raf Cranwell , Trenchard Hall , Sleaford , Lincs ., NG34 8HB

I was speaking to them yesterday and they have a backlog of at least 1000 enquiries .

Paul , I am 99% certain that my uncle would have spelled his name without the "e".
Do you think I have any chance of finding him ?

Regards,
Linden

Thanks for that update on the address; I will amend my sites. Always useful to know this!

I think it will be hard; they seem to not do too well if you don't have a number.
