AFAIK this was a composite group which was part of 2 TAF ; it included 39 Recce Wing, 121 Wing ( Typhoons ), 125,126 and 127 Wings ( Spitfires ).

I have the list of squadrons and types during D-day. Are you interested in that?

It's also of interest to note that Official War Artist Frank Wootton was attached to 83 Group when he painted his famous 'Rocket Firing Typhoons In The Falaise Gap' as well as other Typhoon paintings.

As you probably already know, No. 83 group supported the 2nd British Army, while No. 84 supported the 1st Canadian Army.

For D-Day the composition of 83d Gp was the following:

No. 122 Wing (19, 65, 122 Sqns.) Mustang III
No. 125 Wing (132, 602, 453 RAAF Sqns.) Spit IX
No. 129 W. 184 Sqn Typhoon Ib (on 15 july squadron went to 121 Wing)
No. 126 RCAF Wing (401, 411, 412 Sqns.) Spitfire IX
No. 127 RCAF Wing (403, 416, 421 Sqns.) Spitfire IX
No. 144 RCAF Wing (441, 442, 443 Sqns.) Spitfire IX (on 15 july squadrons went to 125, 126 and 127 Wing respectively)
No. 143 RCAF Wing (438, 439, 440 Sqns.) Typhoon Ib
No. 121 Wing (174, 175, 245 Sqns.) Typhoon Ib
No. 124 Wing (181, 182, 247 Sqns.) Typhoon Ib
No. 39 Recce Wing (168, 414 RCAF, 430 RCAF) Mustang I; 400 RCAF (Spitfire XI)

At the end of war in Europe in may 1945 No. 83 was:

No. 121 Wing (184, 175, 245 Sqns.) Typhoon Ib
No. 122 Wing (3, 56, 80, 486 RNZAF Sqns.) Tempest V
No. 124 Wing (137, 181, 182, 247 Sqns.) Typhoon Ib
No. 125 Wing (41, 130, 350 (Belg.) Sqns.) Spit XIV
No. 126 RCAF Wing (401, 411, 412 Sqns.) Spitfire IX; 402 RCAF Spit XIV
No. 127 RCAF Wing (403, 416, 421, 443 Sqns.) Spitfire XVI
No. 143 RCAF Wing (438, 439, 440 Sqns.) Typhoon Ib
No. 39 RCAF Recce Wing (414 RCAF, 430 RCAF) Spitfire XVI; 400 RCAF (Spitfire XI)

It seems that in 1945 the 4 squadrons Wing was preferred, instead of the 3 squadrons wing of D-day.
