Alexander Bernard Pilbeam

I am looking for any information on 1673064 Sergeant (Flt. Engr.) ALEXANDER BERNARD PILBEAM, He died/killed 17/11/1943, any information on how he met his maker would be a big help, here is a link to the CWGC entry, CWGC :: Casualty Details

He served with 149 Squadron part of 3 group bomber command ?

Hi Wayne,

The following info is taken from Bomber Command Losses Vol.4 - W R. Chorley.

17 November 1943.
149 Squadron.
Stirling III MZ260 OJ-C.
Training Flight

Crew.
P/O. G T. Lowe RNZAF +
Sgt. A B. Pilbeam +
Sgt. R A. Nicholls +
Sgt. L J. Solomons +
Sgt. A F A. Smith.
Sgt. D W. Francis RCAF.
Sgt. S S J. Haines.

Overshot from three engined approach and crashed at Lakenheath airfield, Suffolk. Sgt. Pilbeam had been head boy at Highfield School in Blackpool. Sgt. Solomons served under the name of Somers. Those who perished rest in various United Kingdom cemeteries; P/O. Lowe RNZAF being taken to Cambridge City Cemetery.

Many thanks Peter, that would have taken me for ever to find, from his service number 1673064 and age 19, would he have enlisted or volunteered in 1942, thanks again Wayne

From his number,it would suggest that he joined the RAF after November 1941.His reception centre is unclear, (the reception centre being the RAF unit at which he was inducted into the RAF.)

Until early 1940, blocks of service numbers were issued to cover those who were inducted at the RAF receception centres at Uxbridge, Cardington and Padgate.After this date, many more RAF reception centres were set up and the block 1650001 to 16992488 is recorded as being "UK enlistments from various centres" which could include the three RAF reception centres as above.

The actual casualty's RAF reception centre can therefore only be ascertained from his RAF service record.
