Early on the Beauforts were used for recce/strike/patrol/anti-shipping work (some using torpedos), including a few famous missions against Rabaul. Later on they were also used in the close support role. By 1944/45 there was very little Jap shipping, apart from small barges, left in the SWPA.

Yes, I was just reading that they were involved in night attack, while other a/c (both RAAF and USAAF) usually operated during daylight hours.
Did the B-24 of 868th BS bomb during the night? AFAIK that squadron had SB-24.

And Blackblue, were the RAAF Spitfire squadrons equipped with 16 a/c only?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure on either count Max. I am sure you could find some reference to the accepted establishment numbers somewhere on the web. Perhaps try the official history again?

no 84 and 86

Ok, I'll try the official story. I'm reading it, but not finished yet.

About the no. 84 and 86 sqn I've found:

In order to provide sufficient aircraft and equipment to increase the
capacity of squadrons, Air Force headquarters disbanded two squadrons
(Nos. 86 and 84) which returned to Townsville, Queensland, and wer e
reduced to cadre . Their Kittyhawks were taken over by Nos . 78 and 81
Wings of No. 10 Group.

So this is the reason why they had to wait many month for the Mustang.

Tim,
at last I found that also the Spitfire sqns were composed by 24 a/c (at full strength).
From the official history: 79 sqn. in march 1944 had 24 a/c. 1st FW in Darwin area had 71 Spitfires for 3 squadrons (452,457 and 54 RAF).
