23-24 August 1943. No.156 Squadron. Lancaster III ED829 GT- Op: Berlin. Took off 2013 hrs from Warboys. Believed to have crashed in the Tegeler See, exploding on impact. Seven crew lost.

A few details on the above RAF loss. Three Beaufighters of No.46 Squadron Missing 15 November 1942 Three Beaufighters of 46 squadron were detached from Egypt to Malta, but never arrived, their fate being unknown. Two days later German Intelligence reported that their fighters had shot down three Beaufighters. There are six known No.46 Sqn deaths on this date. On the 23 June 1943 she along with three members were arrested by the gastapo and taken to Avenue Foch, Paris where on the 6 July she was injected with phenol and place in a furnace LEIGH Vera Eugenie Ensign, F/15 Women’s Transport Service [F.A.N.Y.] First Aid Nursing, attached to Special Operations Executive, executed 6 July 1944 age 40. Daughter of Mr & Mrs Eugene Leigh Commemorated at Brookwood Memorial, Near Pirbright, Berkshire. Born in Leeds 17 March 1903, and went on to join the French Resistance. She at one time was a First Aid Nursing Yeomanry [FANY] then became an S.O.E. agent. On the 30 April 1943 she was arrested by the Gestapo and imprisoned at Fresnes. On the 6th July 1944 she was taken to Natzweiler Concentration camp where she was injected with phenol and placed in a furnace along with Diana Rowden. ROWDEN Diana Hope Section Officer 4193, Woman Auxiliary Air Force att to S.O.E. and Mentioned in Despatches. And Croix De Guerre. Executed 6 July 1944 age 29, daughter of Major Aldred Clement and Christian Rowden of Binsted, Hampshire. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial, Englefield Green, Egham. Born in England 31 January 1915 and the family moved to France. Where in 1943 became a S.O.E. agent. On the 18 November 1944 she was arrested with two other agents and taken to the Gastapo Headquaters, Avenue Foch , Paris and on the 6 July 1944 she was taken to the above concentration came and later that day was injected with phenol and placed in a furnace OLSCHANEZKY Sonia Sous-Lietenant. She was actively involved in the war as messenger from agents to others, and involved in sabotage and carrying wireless parts. To W/T Operators. She was betrayed and arrested June 1944 when she was suppose to meet with an agent but the Gestapo was waiting. She was executed at Natzweiler 6 June 1944 aged 21 years of age. Commemorated on a plaque at Struthof_Natzweiler Camp, Crematorium, Alsace Killed at Gaggenau GOUGH Victor Captain 148884, Somerset Light Infantry. Murdered in Erich Forest near Gaggenau on the 25/11/1944. Buried in Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany 3.K.22 Separate Memorial, same site G.H.Q. LIASON REGIMENT PHANTOM a Wireless Communications Unit F Squadron Phantom was in France carrying out a special role to provide communications for the SAS. This was called Operation Loyton This memorial is erected to the memory of three members of F Squadron who were killed on Operation Loyton and to others who gave up their lives at the same time DAVIS Gerald Donovan, Sergeant 6898743 Royal Armoured Corps attached to G.H,Q, Liason Regt, executed on the 20/8/1944 age 26. Son of Mr and Mrs G H Davis of Maidenhead, Berkshire. Buried in Moussey Churchyard, France. Grave 6 Additional information taken from this memorial.Originally Queen Victoria Rifles and Royal Armoured Corps. He was betrayed, captured, tortured and shot on the 20 August 1944 JOHNSTON George Gourley Signalman 2583876, Royal Corps of Signals attached to G.H.Q., Liason Regt, killed 20/10/1944 age 28. Son of Adam Legg Johnston and Ena Summers Johnston of Kirkcaldy, Fife. Commemorated on the Groesbeek Memorial, Netherlands Additional Information taken from this memorial He was killed in combat near Fontenoy-la-Joūte, France on 22 October 1944 when returning through enemy lines. He has no known grave BANNERMAN Peter Signalman 2369000 Royal Corps of Signals attched to 2nd SAS, killed 20/10/1944 age 23. Son of George Beattie and Isabella Bannerman of Inverbervie, Kincardineshire. Buried in Moussey Churchyard, France, grave 4 Additional information taken from this memorial. 61 Squadron. Hampden I X3147 QR- Op: Cologne. Took off 2014 hrs from Hemswell. Crashed 0414 hrs at Syderstone, 6 Miles WNW of Fakenham, Norfolk and burst into flames. Sgt. Loates was a Canadian serving in the RAF. BCL Vol.2 W R. Chorley.
