CWGC have just commented on their recent 'climate change' experiment: :: CWGC :: Railway Chateau looks rather grim. What do you think?

Oh dear, thats horrible. I cant help but feel that central Government puts agencies such as them under pressure. As much as I think its important to bear in mind environmental impact, lets get things in context. The CWGC cemeteries are a tiny pinprick on the worlds surface, and a drop in the ocean compared to some of the countries out there belching out fumes and gases with no regard for the future. Added to that, I have always been touched by the commissions way of making its cemeteries fit for heroes, and a little piece of England. Gravel just doesnt work, in my opinion.

God! Is that it, in the second photo, Geoff? That looks bloody awful! Dunno. I suppose they adopt that style where grass can't be grown. And, if they can't grow grass ..... But, no. Sorry. That just looks ghastly. I hate it. I never had a strong view about cemeteries before. But then, I've only ever seen them as grassed places. It's just the tradition I've grown up with. Trying to put my finger on it; That shot just reminds me of somewhere out the back of a prison ..... Horrible.

I'm sure the local cats will love it but can't say I'm keen. Do they have recy crews on standby to deal with bogged wheelchairs and mobility scooters? Mind you, it'll stop them speeding, so there are H&S benefits. Slightly more seriously: CWGC are clearly toeing the party line but it seems a strange response to global warming to remove something that eats carbon dioxide. If the problem is excessive water usage, it's strange they don't mention it. It all sounds more 'low-maintenance' (dare I say cost-cutting?) to me, I'm afraid. Let's just hope they don't make Kranji, Taiping et al look like Japanese gardens as that would be in poor taste. Oh dear - just noticed the survey. Must try to resist the urge to point out that quarrying stone is unsustainable and nasty... |

I have to agree with the other comments regarding the experiments. I just do not like the changes. I hope they try a better type of grass more suited to drought conditions as looking at the bare earth sends shivers down my spine and it does not look correct. Perhaps I am loath to change, but I was always taught to change only when there are positive advantages. This looks far from positive to me at the moment. Regards Tom

Am going to see one of these cemeteries shortly, so will reserve judgement until I've been there, but must admit it does look odd.

CWGC are an organisation for whom a large part of the 'business' is horticulture. Horticulturalists on the whole seem pretty intrigued by the potential/possibility of climate change, and how to keep things presentable if it ever becomes a real factor. Seems logical that they'd look into it as part of their ongoing ornamental gardening work. The photos are pretty thin to make a judgement on aesthetics. Aren't there already gravel/sand/rock cemeteries in countries where that suits the climate? Maybe we won't be surprised by an arid look or hardier plantings if such measures ever became necessary in Western Europe. Few things look tattier than parched turf. |
