Hi,

I moved this into the cemeteries and Memorials catagory as I think it is probably better here.

To trace German soldiers who died in WW2 visit:

http://www.volksbund.de/

and click on the image of the German cemetery in the top navigation bar entitled Gräbersuche.

A direct link to the research page is:

Sadly I suspect this is exactly how they come up for sale... thousands appeared after the USSR fragmented and came from German grave sites looted for profit.

Unfortunately (a bit like the US ABMC lists) this only lists those who have graves (whether individual or mass) in the attendance of the KgV. Those who died at home , or were buried in private plots ,or are completely missing without trace (many, many thousands!) aren't listed.

Dave.

(see my ("Croonaert"s) posting on the GWF for further comments on the half tags)

assuming that half tags are created when one half is taken from a dead soldier ( ), are the different halves identifiable? do they both have holes for the chain?

On this scan, the ones on the left are the bits that would be left on a corpse and the ones on the right are (top) a complete tag and (bottom) the half that was removed after death.

The fact that half tags are found is not necessarily indicative of the original owner being KIA, by the way.

Chris.

Just for interest's sake, here's a selection of WW1 1916 pattern tags. The halves on the left are all bottom halves that would have been removed. The half on the right is the top half shown with a complete example.

These discs have all been researched and none are to casualties!
