Autolycus.
This was actually proposed by Professor R.V. Jones in November 1945 and was put into service with Coastal Command, but not a great success. It was indeed intended to home in on exhaust products emitted by combustion engines.
Most Secret War, 1979, R. V. Jones

One of the drawbacks of Schnorkel was when the valve closed to prevent sea water entry, the air pressure inside the sub decreased rapidly and was distressful to the crew, not sure if it damaged ears but quite possible. One boat used it to good effect when a electric motor burnt out filling the boat with horrid fumes. The engineer quickly arrange the Schnorkel to draw air from inside the boat into the diesels to clear the smoke. Not sure which book I read this in, possibly Wolfgang Hirschfeld's Secret Diary of a U-Boat (excellent book, by the way).

Roskill.
Of course Roskill was written before the Enigma story broke. Enigma decrypts were a significant factor. A boat unlucky enough to report its position using the naval grid system and have its code broken would give its position within a 6 nautical mile square. If it was arranging a rendevous with a 'milch cow', it was in a dangerous position.

From my own understanding of Submarine operation in the modern period, this same pressure drop still causes ears to pop and make it a little uncomfortable for the sub crew....lots of aspects of modern operations are exactly the same as WW2....will we ever find a capital ship to compare with the submarine?....diesel elctrics are still very difficult to detect when submerged and on battery power, and all the gadgets have not changed this....subs are only going to get quieter, and technological instruments can only be so sensitive...
