Yamamoto's reputation isn't solely based on his performance during the war. He along with counterparts in allied navies was one of the earliest recognizers of the potential for aircraft in naval warfare. Japan along with Britain were the early pioneers in this. Yamamoto like all commanders was at the mercy of his lieutenants abilities. Nagumo at Pearl Harbor and in later battles was conservative and cautious and undermined Yamamato's plans. The Americans thought he was so critical a part of the Japanese war machine that they specifically targeted him for assasination. Shooting down his plane later in the war. There are few generals if any who can't be second guessed in retrospect. Perhaps as you say, Y is overated. But failing to win against the USN during the war isn't a reason for challenging his reputation. Great Commanders with huge reputations like Napoleon, Hannibal, Guderian, Model, Lee, Rommel. Mark Antony all ended up losing the last and deciding battle. Yours GM | |
