great choice. You know you always come across references to corvettes when reading of Royal Navy actions. Busy buggers. Must be a number of British Navy veteran around still who served on them. It sounds as they looked like tugboats on steroids from what you've said. Wasn't it a corvette that was accidentally rammed by the Queen Mary? By the way Welcome aboard Have fun Cheerios GM | |

![]() | Thanks for the "Sir" thing, but Iīm nothing compared with other fellas that rule this site. ![]() The USS Houston was a 10000 tonner of the Northampton Class which together with the lights USS Marblehead and USS Boise made up the big guns of Task Force 5 (Asiatic Fleet) under Rear Admiral Glassford in ABDACOM during the hectic days of the Jap initial onslaught. It went down with colors flying and guns blazing, together with almost all of Dutch admiral Doormanīs fleet, during the Battle of the Java Sea. Here are some links that might be useful to ya: HyperWar: US Asiatic Fleet, 1941, INDEX, and HyperWar: USS Houston (CA-30) And finally, some pics of the "Galloping Ghost of the Java Sea" ![]() ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() | For the most part yes, but some were still in use with US Navy. The USS Greer was one such ship. U.S. Navy - The Destroyers (bottom third of the page) As was the USS Reuben James. Last edited by Slipdigit; 07-03-2008 at 06:39 PM. |

![]() | You learn something new every day... ![]() Didnīt say anything the isnīt true. However, now that I have the chance, let me praise in the same way the rest of Doormanīs fleet; even though they were the clear underdogs, out-everything and with severe handicaps due to very different operational procedures between navies, they went in and fought the Nip to the very end. Everyone in that doomed battle went down with colors flying and guns blazing.
