Gloster Gladiator or Fiat CR-42

Biplane fighters in the war that saw the dawning of the jet era? Which one of this two direct contenders was better?

Only cos its bound to get pasted in the all Italian stuff is rubbish. Good aircraft and often put up a good fight to superior equipment.

Didn´t wanna chip in here, being my own post, but I have to say that Faith, Charity and Hope make me go for the Gloster craft; proved to be a good match for the Regia Aeronautica in the hectic days after hell broke loose in the Med, a bit more so than the Fiats for the Hurricanes of the Desert Air Force

Warlord, dont get taken in by that British propaganda, the CR-42 was great aircraft and like the Gladiator the last of a long line of aircraft, they where well developed and fit for purpose.

Hard choice, but I went on looks alone, so add one for the CR-42. I can't argue performance on either one.

Being not very 'plane aware' those were exactly my criteria .

That, and the Taranto attack was a hell of a thing. Sends shivers up me every time I read of it.

I'm useless at planes.
Just had a look on Google found this about the RAF testing a captured CR-42.
Håkans Aviation page - Fiat CR.42 Falco

Quote:
The famous test-pilot Captain Eric M. Brown, RN, had an opportunity to fly the captured CR.42 MM5701,
which was captured after a forced-landing in the later stages of Battle of Britain. He reported that the aircraft was an aerobatic gem. It was remarkably fast for a biplane with a top speed of 270 mph at 12,400 ft and a marginal stability, the hallmark of a good fighter. The CR.42 was a superb biplane that gave an outstanding performance for its type, but as a fighter it was under-gunned. Though highly manoeuvrable, like all aircraft with a lot of fabric covering it was very vulnerable to enemy fire.
Still dunno how to vote.

EDIT > Doh! Just further Googled MM5701 and found out I've seen it at RAF Hendon.
