According to my grandpa that did serve in the Winter War and Continuation War and he didn’t like the MP-40 to heavy and to few rounds in the magazine and it didn’t work in the arctic winter…The best Submachine gun according to him is the M31 SUOMI
Best regards
Belaya Smjert

Two Finnish soldier with the SUOMI

Has anyone read the book The MP4- Submachine Gun? Goes through the entire history of the gun and its family. Also describes its Allied counterparts and tactics used with the gun.

The MP 40 was produced by ERMA, it had 6 riflings with a muzzle velocity of 381m/s, the same as its predecessor, the MP 38. It's rate of fire was 500 rpm and had an effective range of 70m, also like the MP 38. Also like the MP 38 was the ammunition, firing 9x19mm Parabellum rounds. The major difference between the two weapons is the unloaded weight. The MP 38 was 4.11 kg while the MP 40 was 3.9 kg.

The MP 40 was tested by the US army and earned a 79/100.

Is it true that the MP40 wasn't that available in the war? I got told that only squad leaders or officers carried one, while most infantry carried the Kar98. Herroberst will you help me out on this, please?
Always liked the MP40 ever since I watched 'Where Eagles Dare' when I was a young un'.

We had a squadron commander who believed in the head-on attack. 'The next raid we go up to intercept, we will do a head-on attack,' he said. So he attacked an Me 110 head-on and I'm afraid Jerry got the better of him and all we found of him was his shirt! Flying Officer Harold Bird-Wilson, 17 Squadron.

Maschinenpistole were carried by NCOs, Panzer crews, Pioneers and a host of others. The standard weapon of the Schutze was the K98. Later they used the G41/43 and in the Ardennes many were armed with the StG-44, mostly SS. They are an enjoyable weapon to fire. What a minute 3/27/05 I'm still brushing off the dust.

I think that the Mp-40 is a very good weapon, even though the PPSH probably was more realiable in arctic weather conditions, Stalingrad for example. If the germans found a PPSH on the ground, they would pick it up and use that one instead of the MP-40. At least this is what I have been told, please correct me if I'm wrong. Overall, I think that the Mp-40 was a great gun, even though it had it's up's and down's
