Question k98 hole in stock?

I am seeking an answer to a question that has perplexed me for some time. What was the hole in the German k98 rifle stock used for - the one with a circular metal fitting around it on both sides of the stock (butt?).

Thanks!

Jonathan

I wondered too.

Hopefully Herr Oberst will come and explain. I believe he's shot with them.

Re: k98 hole in stock?

It was used as an aid to reassemble the bolt but I suspect it's more useful function was to lock the guns up with a solid rod when in armoury racks.
Cheers,
Adam.

Yup, well Owen's described it well.

Nope, Waffenmeister would have many boots up your ass if you touched armory rifles when you weren't supposed to.

Racked weapons are never locked just the door to the armory room or vault.
