Lt Cdr Wilfred Baker dies aged 106 - RIP

BBC NEWS | UK | Scotland | Edinburgh and East | World War veteran dies aged 106

World War veteran dies aged 106

A war veteran thought to have been Scotland's second-oldest man has died at the age of 106.
Wilfred Baker joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18 and fought in both World War I and World War II.
He stayed on with the navy, travelling all over the world, before retiring as a lieutenant commander in 1948.
It is understood the great, great-grandfather, originally from England, died on Monday at Newlands House care home in Dunfermline.
Friend Alan Tyson, 78, paid tribute to Mr Baker.
"He still knew what was going on despite his failing health," he said.
"He was a very nice man and although I hadn't seen him recently I had a great time at his 106th birthday party at the home last year." The pensioner had lived in Dunfermline since his retirement from the navy. He was understood to have been just a day younger than the oldest man in Scotland, Bob Taggart of Rutherglen.

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)
