![]() | Any idea of the identity of the Finnish submarine? Where would they have got it from? Battleships-cruisers.com doesn't mention the Finnish Navy so it must have been pretty small. Judging by some of the other news stories next to that article ("Baby born with four legs" etc) I wonder if its worth taking this story with a slight pinch of salt?

![]() | So the Finns did build their own submarines then. I suppose these days they build cruise-liners and in fact have a more active shipbuilding industry than we do, so it not surprising that they have a long tradition of this.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | In 1940 the Finnish Navy had five submarines, of which four were capable of laying mines, an important activity in the Baltic where they operated. At the end of the war they were all still in service, but were scrapped in accordance with the terms of the peace treaty. Finnish submarines were the product of German designers and Finnish shipyards. They were direct descendants of the German UB.II and UB.III of WW1. An interesting submarine was the Saukko a small coastal boat built to German designs, she could be dismantled into two sections for transporting to Lake Ladoga, then on Finland's eastern boundary.

![]() | The WW2 Finnish submarine Vesikko, built in Germany, is preserved & open to the public at Suomenlinna, which is a fortress built on a series of islands off Helsinki. It was constructed by the Swedes in the 18th century; they called it Sveaborg & its defences were compared to those of Gibraltar. There are a number of museums, several but not all of them military & it's easily reached by boat from Helsinki. It's a nice place so a lot of the visitors are there for the scenery rather than the museums. There's also a permanent population & a Finnish Navy base. Suomenlinna
