I wouldn't be hopeful, either. The German people have made huge efforts to address the Nazi past over the last 50 years: talk to just about any young German and they will express nothing but contempt and loathing for the Nazis. However, I get the impression that Austria is still in denial. When Kurt Waldheim was 'outed' some years ago there appeared to be a collective shrugging of the shoulders and muttering of 'so what?'. It's also bound up with the history and politics of the Middle East of the last 50 years: I suspect very few states would be happy to hand over 'citizens' to the Israelis, if that is what is proposed.

Its a pity that these war criminals were not apprehended early post war.There were a number on the lose and some like Klaus Barbie were protected by the Americans when he was given employment by them.The other outstanding example was Heinz Lammerding.Despite French calls for his arrest and extradition to the French Zone from the British Zone for his involvement in the atrocities in the Oradour sur Glane massacre and to account for the catalogue of atrocities committed by the Das Reich on its march from SW France to Normandy, he remained untouched in the British Zone of occupation.

Egypt and Syria wre known havens of some Nazi elite and were welcomed for reasons which have been well established.

Others remained untouched because they were considered by the Western Powers as being an asset in the Cold War struggle that immediately became apparent post war.

There were the others whole played the foot soldiers in the terror machine and in the chaos of Europe at the war end turned up the the West after claiming to having DP status.
