The "Island"

Off to Holland again first week of May. This year I am planning to visit the "Island" and follow the evacuation route of operation Noah, when the Germans succeeded in blowing the Dyke in the Seaforths area December 3rd 1944.
The operation order from 5th Camerons can be seen here, 51 Highland Division Website : Accounts
Once I have the full itinerary I will advise of any Cemetery's that I will be visiting.
The order states that they expected 3 feet of water, That was true if you were on the raised roads. In the fields etc it reached 6 feet plus.

sapper will become famous soon enoughsapper will become famous soon enough
I was given the job of going over the bridge not long after it had been taken, Steel structure with infantry men with brens and rifels, watching for sea mines being floated down the river .The enemy hoped to hit the bridge and blow it.

If my memory serves me right? on the Island I found a Engineering place? With a concrete hard standing? On the right hand side of the road driving towards Arnhem...
(nearly 64 years ago) I never went further, the road was straddled with shell fire and I had enough.

Betuwe; "The Island"

Had a great day touring round the Island and visited a small museum, the proprietor has set it up in probably his garage, but well worth the visit, he was very knowledgeable too. His website here Van D-day tot VE-day
Thought Owen might like these particular photo's.

Coming off the Island stopped off at this Memorial, across the river opposite Kate te Horst's House. This is the point at which the surviving Paras were landed on their withdrawal from the battles at Arnhem and a Photo of Arnhem Rail bridge from the memorial site.
