El Alamein & Tobruk

Hi all and thank-you for accepting me as a member
Myself and my girlfriend were hoping to visit the above probably late Sept, but it looks like Tobruk might be too difficult due to travel restrictions. It's my understanding we would have to be part of an organised group to be granted entry visas. Can anyone confirm this?
Regards,
Simmo.

Simmo as Tobruk is in Libya there may be restrictions. Have a goo at this thread on the virtual tourist forum:

Welcome aboard Simmo,
Not being much of a traveller I'm afraid I can't help much other than with the CWGC's advice on visiting Tobruk:
CWGC :: Cemetery Details

However, if you do manage to get there it'd be nice if you could share any photographs with us as they're not areas people often visit.
(You may get 'one or two' requests for specific Grave photographs too... brace yourself ).

Cheers,
Adam.

Thank you both. I earnestly hope this will happen. If travel restrictions have recently been 'relaxed' I wonder what they were like before! Will keep you posted.

Welcome Simmo,

Being a West Oz lad, I am sure you would help a fellow Aussie out with "a few" photos even if he is from the other side of the rabbit proof fence.
(I collect photo's of RAAF/AFC headstones and memorials from around the world - 11,300+ in 1075 cemeteries/memorials in 65 countries)

Cheers

Geoff

Hi Geoff - never been to Melbourne. I hear it's a bit nippy this time of year and talking of fences - looks like I might have to hop a few to get any photos I understand there has to be a minimum of 4 in a tour party before entry visas are considered. Independent travel isn't permitted!
All itineraries start and finish in Tripoli and none include El Alamein (also the shortest tour is 15 days which is time I haven't got). Looks like it may have to be one or t'other.

Hi Simmo,

Looks like a bit of a closed shop which is understandable for the area. If I win Powerball's $50 million tonight I will help make up the numbers.

Someone's won the whole lot. Was it you Geoff? I could do with a loan

I've been sent an itinerary from a specialist tour company but it would still take too long and seems a bit light on the battlefield side of things. But there doesnt seem to be a problem there being only 2 of us.

No it wasn't, hence my presence here in front of my laptop. My brother was working near the agency in Reservoir that sold the winning ticket. Cameras were snapping like crazy.

One chap won the lot and it ended up being $58 million which shows the huge amount invested this week.

Cheers

Geoff
