    Wilk34,

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The above list is that of the whole Regimental soldiers who were killed.

I suppose the odds are that there may be one or more surviving, but tracing them will not be easy.
I for one have no idea where to start apart from placing a request in the Royal British legion Magazine or military forums such as this.

    Regards
    Tom

At the annual Service of Remembrance in Hexham, Northumberland, last month, a wreath was laid of behalf of the 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment Old Comrades Association. Must still have some members to pay for the wreath and keep the memories alive of those listed above.
    Regards,
    Richard

Your Great uncle is mentioned in the Roll Of Honour in 'The History Of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in the Second World War' (CN Barclay). On pages 154 and 155 it mentions that at "midnight 6/7th August both squadrons [B and C] were definitely held up and the enemy still in possession of the feature [high ground near Vire]. Lieut. DG Snelling was later awarded the Military Cross for the handling of his armoured car troop (C sqn.) in this engagement. ... Desultory fighting continued for the next few days..."

They did some liaison work with the US 102nd Mechanised Cavalry Group during this period.

    Best,

    Steve.

    Hello Bill,
    First, welcome to the forum.

By chance I was at The National Archives a couple of weeks ago and copied 3 Recce’s missing personnel file which mentions your father-in-law.

About 1500hrs on 3rd March 1945 near Kapellen Tpr M Bateson was captured after his vehicle was hit. The other members of the crew, L/Sgt R Byrne and Tpr R Inman were killed. Bateson then returned to his unit with a white flag and a German soldier. The German asked the British to remove two wounded British men on condition that Bateson returned as a prisoner. This duly happened.

See attached PDF from WO 361/554 (North West Europe: 3rd Reconnaissance Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps; missing personnel. 1944 Jul 01 - 1945 Apr 30.). This give more details. Doesn't say who the wounded men were or what happened to them.

    What became of your father-in-law?

    Regards,
    Richard

PS. Thanks Andrea for the Missing Personnel spreadsheet list. Wouldn’t have found this file otherwise.

PPS. Yes, one day I'll get the rest of the file put on the forum!
