IFCP has now made a start on finding the graves of those named on the Brookwood Memorial. Obviously most died at sea or in circumstances where a body would not be found. However so far the graves of the following have been found. Name: WIENCKE, HENRY JOHN Initials: H J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Warrant Officer Class II (Q.M.S.) Regiment/Service: Royal Armoured Corps Date of Death: 19/08/1944 Service No: 7904624 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 1. Column 2. Memorial: BROOKWOOD MEMORIAL Fordyce Cemetery Banffshire With thanks to TWGPP Name: LAPAGE, JOAN Initials: J Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Nursing Member Regiment/Service: Voluntary Aid Detachment Date of Death: 01/02/1940 Service No: W/531045 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 23. Hi Chris, Are you open to offers too? There has been a bit of a mystery within a thread about an officer, Major Packenham 2 CG thought to have been killed at Furnes in May 1940. He's remembered on the memorial but thought to be buried in Ireland. It was thought to be unusual that he wasn't remembered on the Dunkirk Memorial. All the info so far is from post 69 to 74 and then Post 97 http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/ww2-battlefields-today/16839-walking-footsteps-british-expeditionary-force-2008-2009-a-2.html#post231597 Cheers Andy
Chris Remember that bodies are still being uncovered from both wars so they may have been found identified and buried. The CWGC may not have removed them from the memorial panels due to the cost. To find out why not contact the CWGC and find the official line on these kind of issues.
Chris Remember that bodies are still being uncovered from both wars so they may have been found identified and buried. The CWGC may not have removed them from the memorial panels due to the cost. To find out why not contact the CWGC and find the official line on these kind of issues. I've queried a few I've found on the Brookwood Memorial (Royal Artillery) and not on their database, so they do amend their public records. The response is that they will remove the name off the panel as soon as possible, which maybe never.
Already know the offical line as I have been doing this work with Great War casualties for some time. The names are never really removed from the memorials until the panels are replaced (which of course maybe never); however the database entry will change to reflect the newly found burial place. Drew will be following up on your suggestion which looks pretty good to me, but will have to find the evidence to back it up without which CWGC will not act.
A few attempts have been made to check the church grounds for a headstone and an email sent asking for help/advice sent to an address. Hoping that it will get a result. In meantime some clippings IRO Pakenham (I have dates, mostly from Times) The Times, Jun 05, 1940; OBIT The Times, Jun 08, 1940; PERSONAL TRIBUTE The Times, Jun 08, 1940; FUNERAL The Times, Jul 16, 1940; CASUALTIES IRISH TIMES, Saturday, February 8, 1941 The Times, Jun 01, 1946, In Memoriam
DBF great stuff. If you do come up with anything from the church please let me know. I have a contact who is prepared to photo graves for me if necessary so will let you all know what comes to pass Chris
Just to clarify things if anyone has a name from the Brookwood Memorial & they think they know where the grave is please do let me know Chris
many of those on the Brookwood memorial who were executed for crimes in WW2 have "known" but unmarked graves in prison graveyards but are still commemorated on the Brookwood Memorial
I would not use the word many for that group of servicemen. They are only a handful & no search will be in hand for their graves as they are regarded by CWGC as unmaintainable therefore the presence of their names on the Brookwood Memorial. Chris

My database is now in place & Im going through a process of elimination to find those who are genuinely missing. So far eliminated are those who died at Dieppe, St Nazaire & the other commando raids. All the SOE operatives have been tracked down & have been checking through the ships losses such as the SS Ceramic. Have done a trial run using the Times archives to search for burial places which has resulted in the probable burial place of 2 ATS officers (just waiting for confirmation before giving out the names). All in all this is going to be a very worthwhile excercise.
