Had an interesting trip out this afternoon.

Look at the place where Lt Thomas William Salmon was mortally wounded appraoching one of the bridges over the Antwerp-Turnhout canal. He was the first casualty of the 49 Division Polar Bears in this area.

Lt Salmon and his driver Cpl Rupert Dorgan were approaching the bridge in the following photo when a Spandau mounted on the small building on the other side of the canal opening fire, mortally wounded Lt Salmon. The driver quickly backed away, but he died shortly afterwards.

The building where the Spandau was located is left of picture. It had a commanding view of the approach road to the bridge.

The CWGC plot at Turnhout Communal Cemetery where Lt Salmon is buried. Apparently 1000's of local people attended the funeral before the fighting was even over and he is a local hero remembered in this place with special affection as one of the first from the British Army to arrive to help liberate this town.

    You're welcome Paul.

I was with a local Military Historian who is very knowledgable about the things that happened in this area.

I read with interest the mention of Serjeant FRANK GATENBY. Although not related to me he lived in the same town, Middlesbrough. I am doing some research about him and wonder if you have more information about Frank?
