Pic of some maps I got recently for the Salerno area - 3 of which have Beach tactical data (Blue Maps) - all are 1:50,000 scale.

There's a lot of maps in 1 Scots Guards 1944 diary at Kew. All in mint condition and have no markings on them, they look brand new....I noticed them last week. I think they are either 1:10,000 or 1:25,000

The italy maps were part of a large private purchase I made a couple of years ago - to be honest I completely forgot about the box load of maps until the other weekend... found these 1:50,000 ones of Salerno, also some 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 maps too... some 1:10,000 from the 1800's, stuff from the 1930s, some town and harbour plans etc... plus maps of Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, USA, France, Germany, Holland etc... all WW2 or earlier vintage.

Always handy to know, especially in those scales.

Are the maps catalogued by some remote chance?

    Cheers

My father went into Salerno with the US. Do these maps show the American troops? Even if they don't, it's still interesting.

    Tim.

I have the Italian Army versions of these maps but not the British ones. Would you mind sharing them so that could colour copy them? Cheeky I know.

I have had limited colour reprints made of the Salerno area maps I have, there are 5 maps @ 50,000 and 5 maps @ 100,000.

NB - 2 of the 50,000 have defence overlay with beaches marked.

These reprints are for sale at cost price:

    1 x Set of 10 @ £35 GBP plus P&P (50,000 and 100,000)
    1 x Set of 5 @ £20 GBP plus P&P (either 50,000 or 100,000)

I do not plan to reprint them unless there is significant demand.

PM me if you want to buy a set (I have 4 sets for sale).

If not, they will go to ebay and will have a higher start price.

    Cheers

Can anyone with a period British map show me where grid reference N7224 would be.

I've found a reference in the 10 Corps Int. Summary No. X1 for 10 Sep 43 to "a long 75 mm [SP] mounted an a Mark 3 chassis is now lying knocked out about N7224". There is a picture of such a vehicle in George Forty's Desert Rats at War that is captioned as being near Salerno and a railway embankment can be seen in the background with overhead cables similar to those seen in several of the photos of Royal Scots Greys in the area. It would be very interesting to see if it is indeed the same vehicle.

    Hello everybody,

There are some 1941 US army maps 1:50.000 on the Texas University website, free download:

Italy AMS Topographic Maps - Perry-Castañeda Map Collection - UT Library Online

    The sheets you need are:

    pontecagnano-197-1
    campagna-198-4
    salerno-185-2

Also the Amalfi sheet 1:000.000 see below

    Regards

    Vitellino

I have edited this as I tried to put in the links for the sheets but it didn't work.

    Tom.

I think you will struggle. A four figure grid reference means that it could be anywhere within a square km.

    Vitellino,

Thanks, that's brilliant, just what I was looking for.

    Frank,

Yes, a six figure MR would have been better but looking at the map square above it is very close to the coast and north of the River ASA so it will give me an idea for which British units fought through there. That puts 128 Bde and 2nd and 5th Hamps up on my priority list! The railway embankment in the picture looks much closer than the two - three km indicted by the map above, so I'm thinking that the photo must show a different assault gun to that mentioned in the Int Sum.

    Regards

    Tom,

before you get busy at Kew.. If you need anything from D.SCOTT DANIELL'S book on the Hampshires, then do say so? I've also recently bought a book on 16 Bn D.L.I. 40-46.

Major Laurence E. Stringer (D.L.I.). Printed at the "Styria", Graz, Austria.

    Stu,

Thanks. I've got the section for Salerno in Daniell's book on the Hampshires, but the 16 DLI book sounds v interesting. I've got the Peter Hart book on order from the library but I think that is based mostly on oral history so it would be interesting to compare to the earlier book which I expect is based mostly on the war diary.

I think I might start up a thread to cover all the regimental histories that cover the fighting at Salerno - and then beg people to post up the relevant pages.:D

    Tom,

thats a good idea. I'm willing to do my bit. I'm ok with 56 Division.. Just stuck on 138, & 139 Infantry Brigade of 46 Division. A cheap copy / reprint of the 6 Lincolns is knocking about.. Its a reprint of not much quality. I'm ok with [2/4 KOYLI.]. The History of Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry 39-48. Not sure if there is a regimental history on them?

    Regards,
    Stu.
