I just realized one of the reasons I'm enjoying these so much. These aren't the type of pictures that are shown on History Channel TV or in coffee table books. Or even in contemporary newspapers or magazines.

Assorted preserved Recovery/Repair/Service stuff snapped over the years.
Some postwar, some WW2 in postwar plumage, and lots of Scammells... I like Scammells.

    Dave,

    You are correct.

Always coverage of the fighting Units but never much of the larger percentage of Manpower taken up by Support Units.

Interesting seeing the spades attached to the tracked tank recovery vehicles, which all modern recovery vehicles have.

    Regards
    Tom

WOW these photos are fantastic. I note interestingly enough, that some 70 odd yeras later, we still use the same basic methods. Even looking at the repair facilities, not much has changed.

Fantastic pictures at post 22 reminded me of 2 pictures from my Dad's collection, I know he liked Scammels too. Taken between 1933 & Nov 1938. Both of Scammel Salvage I believe. I bet they don't use run flats :P

Found this one. Lots of hedgerow cutters and what looks like a Sherman with a .50 in the bow mount at 3:35 and a two axle four wheel DUKW looking thing at 4:30

Thank you all for this post, some amazing pictures and video. I am hoping you can all help, Can any one tell me the Vehicle scaling for the following:

Beach Recovery Sections – one per Beach Group

Line of Communication Recovery Companies – Three

I have had a conversation with a chap on another forum and he has stated that there were Light and Heavy Recovery Companies, and I don't believe he is correct. Especially on the L of C Companies, I am certain that they would be able to recover all vehicle types.

I look forward to any assistance you can provide.

    Many thanks

I think there is a confusion here. Certainly there were not light and heavy recovery companies but there were both light and heavy recovery sections in both the Corps Recovery Company and the LoC Recovery Company.

Full War Establishments for all REME units in 21 Army Group can be found in the 21 Army Group section of the forum.

Beach Recovery Sections for D Day etc can be found on the thread for Sword Beach. If you have trouble finding them I can copy them here from my own files.

Some interesting images beginning at 4:26 in this film, for you grease monkeys!

Bonus points available for those who can identify the theme song.
