Something that we forgot Simon. According to the list of names on the large group photograph attached. The one taken at Dehra Dun in 1945, Matthew is present in the fourth row. Lynne can you pick him out to confirm this.

  7. I saw this photo recently and contacted them to say that was not my Dad and did they have any further information. I believe my Dad is at the end of that row on the right but it is so small, I'm not 100%. It certainly looks like him but why would his name indicate someone else? Someone from that site has contacted me to say they'll try to get more information on the photo but it was given as a batch with other pictures and they're not sure anyone would be able to confirm it.

Thank you for all the information on Alexander Hammerton. I'm glad he was also able to return. He outlived my Dad by 2 years.

    Hi Lynne,

Yes, it is a shame that the resolution is poor on that image. If I remember correctly, another family have said that the names do not match up correctly with the position of the soldier.

    Tony,

thank you for checking the casualty lists for the details of the battalions. Clearly 3776493 Cookson W/Cpl FT is not the man in the photograph as he was in Italy. There is a Pte 3772823 V Cookson on the 1st battalion Defence Medal roll, (H.Q. Coy), who may be the right man. Coincidently, I have found a Vincent G Cookson born in West Derby in 1912.

  11. Tony and Simon, thank you both for all the information on my Dad's friends. It is so interesting to read what happened to them.

Is there anywhere I can find out where my Dad's column was in Burma as I'm having trouble working it out. I know the War Diaries are only available at the National Archives at the moment and I can't visit to see them but I wondered if there was anything online that would help me.

    Thanks again,
    Lynne

    Hello Lynne

There are some forum members who can copy the war diaries for you. They offer an excellent service and many of us have used them. They are cheap too:)

I am sure they will be along soon to help.

    Steve,

I have not been able to identify more than half a dozen men in that photograph. However, the presence of L/Cpl Hetherington, who I believe to be 14247931 R Hetherington, who appears on the list of men posted from the 13th battalion, would date the photograph from no earlier than 29th November 1945.

    Hi Simon,

It is a shame that the resolution for that image is so poor. I think Lynne is the second or third family member, not to be sure that their soldier is actually depicted, although the names listing suggests he does. I've only just finished helping a 13KLR family finally understand how their man became a member of the battalion in late 1943, just missing out on Chindit 1.

  15. Thanks Lesley. That would be great! I look forward to hearing from them. :)

  16. I'm glad I'm not the only one! It definitely isn't my Dad in the middle. The soldier is too small and fair.

If I hear back from the Burma Star webpage, I'll let you know.

    Steve,

the trouble with the photograph, apart from the poor resolution is that there are no initials to narrow down the more common names. e.g. CSM Thompson, should be easy but I have a 4196473 Thompson F listed as a RQMS and another CSM anecdotally referred to as 'Nattie' Thompson in Jack Lindo's book. I have two Dempseys, two Lloyds but only one Moneypenny.

Did you ever locate the first section of the Defence Medal Roll? I am cross-referencing it with the Casualty Lists on FMP and getting quite a few matches.

    Simon,

I have written about 4196473 Fred Thompson on my website, he was a Longcloth survivor and I spoke with him several times back in 2013/14. Sadly, Fred died about a year ago. Here is a link to his story:

    Sgt. Fred Thompson

I have not been able to get to the Archives for quite sometime, in fact my readers ticket ran out last October and I have failed to even renew this as yet. I will photograph the whole of the 1 KLR War diary for 1945 as soon as I can. In regards to the Defence Medal Roll, I cannot understand why I only copied a few pages, it makes me thing there were no others present, but let's hope that is incorrect.

I used the roll yesterday to identify a few men who originally joined the 13 KLR post Longcloth to bring the battalion back up to strength. A family sent me the Crossing of the Equator certificate belonging to their father and he had several comrades signatures on the back. Quite a decent bit of detective work involved.

    Best wishes

    Steve

    Steve,

many thanks for the link to Fred Thompson write up, superbly researched and written up as always. I am guessing that he is not the CSM Thompson in the Dhera Dun photograph. His name does not appear on the 29th November list of men transferred from the 13th King's so he presumably transferred over after Operation Thursday but before the 1/ King's were re designated as a parachute battalion.

With regard to the Defence Medal Roll I have only pages 3 and 4 which comprise C Coy and the HQ Coy. It has been very useful regarding names and service numbers but it is impossible to know if every man on the list was also on Thursday. Several names from the list have tallied up with names and services numbers on the Casualty Lists. I have been working on compiling glider lists (in a limited fashion) as these will confirm who actually flew in on the night of the 5th March 1944.

With regard to the 1/King's war diary, it must be my turn to get a round in so I will contact Andy, arrange for some copying and send some over once received. I know the war diary will be particularly useful to me for my database.

    Best wishes,

    Simon.
