    Hi,
My Grandfather was a POW in Stalaag XXA camp 20A. I've attached a list we have.
He was serving with the Middlesex Regiment when he was captured (We believe he was captrued near Le Harve). Although we have lots of his diary entries etc we would love to find out more detail of his regiment and POW camp details

Any advice on doing this would be great

    thanks
    Dan

    Hi,

There are links in this topic about obtaining ICRC records from Switzerland but they are closed for new enquiries until 1st October. It's a free service.

    http://ww2talk.com/index.php?posts/756562/

You need to apply to MOD for his service records. That will cost £30.

Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK

He may have completed a POW Liberation Questionnaire on his arrival
in UK. Not all service personnel did. They are not available online. You either need to go to UK National Archives to look yourself or alternatively ask one of the forum members who offer a copying service to search for it and let you have a copy. You would need to post another topic with a title similar to POW Liberation Questionnaire Look Up Request.

The German POW main index cards are available at UK National Archives if you make a Freedom of Information Request.

    Good Luck

    Regiment: Middlesex Regiment
    POW Number: 17705
    Camp Type: Stalag
    Camp Number: XX-A
    Camp Location: Torun, Poland

For more detail you will need to check if he filled in a Liberation Questionnaire (many didn't) try this link - Archive Research - www.arcre.com Lee is a member of this site.

There is also the International Red Cross who hold files on POW's although they are inundated at the moment it is worth keeping an eye on their site - Requests for information about people held during the Spanish Civil War or the Second World War: Quarterly limit reached

You can also apply for his service records - Request records of deceased service personnel - GOV.UK

Maybe searching for the camp will throw up some sites that may include photos or associations for ex POW's from that particular camp

Hi Dan. Some of the photos in my great grandfather's pow logbook are from Stalag XXA Thorn - which is strange as, although a lot of the guys from his battalion ended up there, his own records make no mention of it!

Anyway, have a look for yourself. If I remember correctly the ones of the boxing match are from XXA.

    Hi,
What a great set up photos and documents, I will have to gather what we have. We have lots of the boxing ones, actors, and other diary entries of his march to the camp

I would love to see those. I am going to Stirling Castle on Thursday to see the logbook again (John's son donated it to the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders museum after he died) to rephotograph the pages with my dslr camera - I just used my iPhone last time and while the quality is pretty good some of the photos could be better and I can go back and zoom in on
    more details.

I'll try and get some uploaded this evening for you. We don't have much information on the photos themself but where i do know any information about them I will

It's amazing what you can pick up by sharing photos though. Often other people will recognise a person or a place and another piece of the jigsaw gets filled in!

I have all the names and addresses from the logbook transcribed (thanks to a group effort with other forum members) and sorted into a spreadsheet - no sign of your grandfather on the list though. A copy is uploaded in the resources section of the forum for members to browse.

Here's a select few of what we have. Unfortunately we don't know who any of the other people are in these photos. We also have a written account of his march to the POW camp.
Hopefully when I get some time I will be able to upload some more better quality photos and letters
