I have recently bought this book. I am willing to help others look for their friends/relatives or old service buddies.
The book will tell you their P.o.W number. Service number. Rank. Regiment & Camp number. The front section of the book details officers. The remainder of the book gives details for other ranks.
I don't check on here that often, so please bear with me.

Mandy, I have a spreadsheet uploaded in the resources section that I'm trying to populate with information about all the men listed in my late great granddad's logbook. It would be very helpful if you could use you're book to track down a few of the names for me as I still have a few blanks. I searched an online version of this book but it's hard work looking at the tiny type on an iPad screen!

I have gone through the book. I am able to fill in a few blanks for you. I just need to write it all up neatly enough to take pic's of it to upload. I will hopefully get to do this in the next day or so.

    Hello Mandy,

What source is this book based on? And who is it by?

It looks very much to me like the first British Officers Page of WO 392/1 down as far as Bampton. (See below). I downloaded it FREE from the National Archives website some time ago.

If the Italian camps are in the book, and the source is WO 392/21 there needs to be a 'health warning'....the Italian camp shown is just ONE of the camps in which the prisoner was held during his time in Italy and is more likely to be the first one rather than the last one.

    Best wishes,

    Vitellino

Hello Vitellino. The page that you uploaded looks like the first page of my book. The Italian camps that are in the book are F 10816. F 31979 & F 07244.
The book is called, "Prisoners of War. British Army. 1939-1945. Written by J.B Hayward & Son. In association with the Imperial War Museum. 1945.
I tried to download it, but I was unable to find a copy.

    Hello Mandy,

    Thanks for your reply.

Now you really have mystified me. As far as I am aware no camp in Italy had a letter in front of its name and certainly the numbers didn't go up to 10816. Do you have a name for these three camps? The best website for the names and numbers of Italian prisoner of war and also internment camps for civilians is campifascisti.it - unfortunately in Italian.

Would you mind letting me have your email address? I can send a zip file then, as it will take forever to upload.

Hi, The Italian camps listed in the book are : Dulag 226. Italy. The 3 with the F prefix are listed as "Feldposts" No locations are given. But they are apparently in Northern Italy. I hope this helps :)

    Thanks Mandy.

I presume that these are the only references in you book to Italian camps

Dulag 226 was a transit camp, the former Prisoner of War Camp PG 77 at Pissignano, Campello di Clitunno in Umbria.

The Feldposts were postal addresses, presumably for transit camps too.

    Regards,

    Vitellino

No problem. I'm sorry that I couldn't shed more light on those camps for you. There are no further mentions of those camps.

    Best wishes

I am attempting to record my Dad's P.O.W. history and any info. would be greatly appreciated. His name was Frederick Joseph Moore of the 2nd. Battallion Gloucesters C Company. He was captured at Cassel 31.05.1940, p.o.w. number 15736 and was incarcerated at Stalag VIII B on 23.06.1940.

    Hi,

If you need any information about your fathers experience with his Battalion prior to his capture you need to apply to MOD Glasgow for his service file.

Get a copy of military service records: Apply for the records of someone who's deceased - GOV.UK

If you post in the 1940 sub forum member Drew5233 may be able to give you an insight on his units activities on his day of capture as he likely has a copy of the unit War diary in his extensive collection.

Your father may have completed a Liberated POW Questionnaire on his return to U.K. They are not available on the internet but the files are searchable at UK National Archives. If you can't get there some forum members offer a look up and copying service if you post a request on the forum.

    Hi,

There are 6 soldiers listed in the 1945 German POW lists with the surname Bowling but no J W Bowling.

There are no officers called Bowling.
