Hi, I'm looking for some information about 3 RTR in Normandy between 6-29th June. I think I might have sent you a pm but I'm not quite sure how that works. I'm trying to find some information out about a friends dad who had his tank knocked out in Normandy.
    Hope you can help.
    Thanks
    Steve

Thank you I found the original burial place which was to the left of the bottom of the avenue if trees 3 of the crew if 5 had been buried there and moved in 1945. Just trying to work out where they came into contact

I like to think I know my way around this area but your details are confusing. Do you mention 'Avenue Ifs'?
    If so where is it?
'Just outside' HF can be Bras, Bourguebus or Soliers.

Sorry auto correct jumped in the avenue of trees that are on the pictures above is what I was talking about. I have a copy of the original war graves document which gives the grid ref when they moved the graves to a CWG cemetery I have via the British library managed to get a copy of the British army map of the time and the grid ref puts the original grave at the bottom towards the left as you look at the pictures above. There is also a good account of the action in the book Taking the Panzers but I am just trying to establish the full details as we are going over soon to pay our respects. One thing that is curious is that the graves are on the opposite side of the village to which the attack happened and I was wondering if the war diaries might shed some light on why

See attached grid ref is down to 8 figures so outs the burial bottom left of the trees (map shows is further south but the no seems to be slightly off compared to the modern overlay)

That looks spot on. Do you have any idea why the graves would have been there as it's the opposite side of the village

The Goodwood Staff Report says that by midday the 'few' 3 RTR tanks that crossed the Hubert Foile-Bourguebus road were destroyed but they were still ordered at 12:34 to advance and secure the Caen-Falaise road only to be told at 12:50 to divert to clearing Bras and then Hubert Folie. The midday advance over the Hubert Foile-Bourguebus road is the only time there were any 3RTR tanks in that area on July 18.
