7394281, Private Roger Adams of 196 Field Ambulance 18th Division, he died of Diptheria as a prisoner of the Japanese on 19/07/43, born 23/09/20, enlisted 16/01/41. This book wasnt filled in until after Private Adams death, apparently only being done to give something to return to his family - its possible his original was with his effects to be returned but as Diptheria is infectious the details were copied over an the original destroyed.

1396272 Sgt Bernard Stanley George Bugg, Casualty he was an Air Gunner with 7 squadron, on his return from his second mission, to Frankfurt on 11 April 1943 they were shot down by Hptm Walter Ehle ( Walter Ehle )
and crashed in Belgium - 5 of the crew (including Bugg) were killed and two others managed to evade capture. Also his log book with his two missions and the death presumed entry - also photos of a memorial at the crash site - this website also shows more photos of it Monument voor bemanning Stirling BK760 MG-X | Hangar Flying

In the roll of honour page he is bottom right

An extract from Bowyer's book "The Stirling Story".
    ".............Six Stirlings failed to return.
Included was BK760-X of 7 Squadron, flown by S/Ldr Chesterman. Arriving fifteen minutes early at the target, his aircraft was hit three times by AA fire before it attacked from 17,000 feet. The aircraft was hit again again heading homewards, then the rear gunner reported searchlights following it. When very low over the village of Bree in the Maescyck area a searchlight illuminated the bomber and light machine gun fire riddled the central and forward parts of the fuselage. Then a fighter raced in to finish it off and set fire to at least four of the wing tanks. A second strike probably killed two gunners.
BK760 then briefly climbed before plunging into a canal. Sgt. Ferguson, the flight engineer, and Sgt. Moore, the navigator, escaped and evaded capture."

Ferguson & Moore made it back - Ferguson died later in the War - I have a write up of Moore's story and he describes the fighter attacks - the first hit the rear gunner, the second hit Sgt Bugg in the head, Moore was passing in the fuselage at the time and believed Bugg was killed instantly.

1.jpg 908279 bombadier Roy Faulkner Newell was a member of 132 (Glamorgan Yeomanry) Field Regiment RA as part of 78th Division when he was killed in North Africa 26/02/43 Casualty at age 23 (22 on his casualty card).

At this time the Germans were heavily attacking the Divisional forward positions.

Sir Harry Secombe served with the same Regiment during this period and in his autobiography "Arias and Raspberries" he has a scan from a diary he kept during the War, this is also included in the text, he says he was a day out in his notes and on 27th February has "party started at 4 o'clock in the morning. lasted throughout the day with terrifc casualties for Jerry. Capain reader and Newell killed by a mine"

War Diary entry mentioning the death of Capt Reader (no mention of Newell but the above links the 2 2.jpg 5.jpg 985 GBM_ROYALART_908000_00031 newell.jpg newell from harry secombes diary.jpg newell ra.jpg WO_175_337_0006.jpg

    Hi Alistair,

Thanks for sharing. Do you know whether Pte Butler actually landed in Sicily?

I know a fair few of 1st Border casualties there were as a result of their gliders crashing into the sea due to inexperienced US tow plane pilots casting them loose far too early.

Fusilier Harold Smith, 3448765, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers 78th Battleaxe Division - killed in action 05/03/43 Casualty

The War Diary has 2 carriers hitting mines then a follow up losing another carrier to a mine and one missing and another follow up having a carrier go missing - Fusilier Smith seems to have been lost at some point in this - the missing men file doesn't help. From a further check of his book his trade was Driver I/C and in 1938 he was down as being part of the Carrier Platoon, so that does seem to tie in with the above incident

French, Alfred Frederick 1665144, 53rd Medium Regiment Royal Artillery, died 31st May 1940 aged 37 Casualty
L/Sgt French had been a pre-War RA member recalled to the colours in 1939, for history of the unit in WW2 see BBC - WW2 People's War - Army: 53rd (London) Medium Regiment Royal Artillery which talks about the arrival of these reservists. From that page it seems likely that L/Sgt French was amongst the casualties while the unit was acting as infantry on the perimeter on the 28/29th and died of his wounds on the 31st, as amongst his items was a letter saying he had wounded (the unit seems to have stayed together as a coherant group) - although of course it was a confused time so the date could be wrong.

L/Sgt French has been discussed here http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/1940/28308-53rd-regt-r-1940-war-diary.html

Hi Steve, I'm not sure - the fact it doesn't look water damaged is probably a sign he made it to dry land - also not sure of the fact his date of death is the 10th as opposed to all the 9ths may be another sign he died in the fight rather than the crossing.

Over the years I've met and spoken to a good few Border veterans - I think possibly 1 or 2 made it without ditching - I'm planning visiting Sicily in July for the anniversary and will visit Private Butlers grave.

Cpl Alfred Surtees 13115148, age 39, 303 Company Pioneer Corps.

303 Company was part of the early waves on Sword beach, from "the Pioneer" magazine one of Cpl Surtees comrades describes them coming in and the Landing Craft taking 8 direct hits before pulling away and transfering the men to another craft to try landing again. The Company was tasked with assisting the medical serives and seems to have worked in the main as stretcher bearers and later grave digging. The Company War Diary notes that Cpl Surtees died of wounds on the 8th - his service book also has the 8th noted, however CWGC has his date of death as the 7th - I've also seen a letter to his wife correcting the date from Killed 8th ro Died of Wounds 7th. I'm unsure if Cpl Surtees was wounded in the initial landing or later.

    Thanks Alastair.

Another new bit of knowledge for me as I would never have imagined Pioneer Corps soldiers would have been part of any invasion force.
