    Aircraft Type: Hurricane
    Serial number: T 9532
    Radio call sign:
    Unit: 59 Operational Trg RAF

    Summary:

On the 6th September 1943, Hurricane T9532 was detailed to carry out a formation
training exercise with Hurricane W9145. The aircraft collided with one another, and the
tail units of both aircraft broke off and the aircraft caught fire. Both pilots were killed.

    Crew: T9532
    RAAF 425726 PO McDougall, G A (Pilot)

    Crew : W9145
    RAF McConvoy, (Pilot)

FO Cattermoul was leading a section of 3 aircraft with McConvoy and McDougall both
pupils at Nos 2 and 3 respectively. After take off, the Leader led the formation to the
Dunbar area where the air was smoother. After putting the Section into echelon starboard,
the Leader told them to stand by for a “Peel Off” to port, then carried out this manoeuvre.
No 2 waited until the Leader was diving, then began to “Peel Off” after him, but No 3
(McDougall) banked more steeply than No 2 without waiting for him to dive away. The
aircraft collided and exploded at a height of 6000 feet, and Flt Sgt McDougall was killed
in the crash. McConvoy baled out or was flung clear and he pulled his ripcord at 3000
feet, landed in the sea and was picked up by a fishing boat. FO Cattermoul was not aware
of the accident until he returned to base.

The accident was considered an error of judgement by PO McDougall.

FO McDougall is buried in the Haddington (St Martins) New Burial Ground, UK.

    Summary:

On the 11th October 1943, Hurricane W9311 from RAF Montrose, spun in and crashed at

    Crew:

RAAF 412622 Flt Sgt S W Murray, (Pilot)

Flt Sgt Murray is buried in the Montrose Sleepyhillock Cemetery, Scotland.
A Flying Accident report stated : “ Two aircraft flown by Flt Sgt Murray and Sgt Blair
took off at 1515 hours to carry out an exercise quarter attacks from a head on approach.
They proceeded to the Montrose Basin area, Murray acting as the target aircraft. Blair
completed his attacks successfully. The aircraft then changed over and Sgt Blair became
    the target aircraft.
Murray completed three attacks successfully. The fourth attack was the last that Blair saw
of Murray. He tried to make contact by R/T but failed. He then contacted the ground
station and returned to base. Eye witnesses stated that Murray completed his 4th attack but
to do so involved a very tight turn .He then appeared to have closed to very close astern
of Blair, and then continued in a steep bank away to starboard and downwards, which
developed into a slow spin, from which the aircraft did not recover before it hit the
    ground.”

    Summary:

On the 11th October 1943, Oxford LF328 from RAF Silloth, Cumberland,,was detailed to
carry out an operational training W/T exercise. The aircraft crashed at 0900 hours near
Finnie Gill, Scotland, and all on board were killed.
There were no eye witnesses to the accident, but a ROC Observer heard an aircraft but
could not see it, and in his opinion the engines sounded normal, though appeared to
increase in speed as though diving. The aircraft hit the ground in almost a vertical dive.
The cause of the accident was obscure, but it was considered possible that the Pilot had
lost control of the aircraft in cloud, and the aircraft dived with not sufficient height to
    recover.

Sadly my grandparents are no longer alive & I can't find any details of 'Tam' in their records.

I only have photos of flying officer Graves. He was 22 and in the royal canadian airforce and from Ottawa Canada. I have been to the gravesite it is in a lovely location. There are about 20 military headstones as you enter the graveyard and Clark and Graves are buried beside each other
    Hope this helps

    Hello Gary,

Thank you for the info. I have edited the post and have added the photo of Clark and the cemetery. If you wish to add your photo of Graves and a better one of the cemetery if you have it, please do so in another post or send it to me by email and I will include them in the original post.
