I reckon its all part of the Chinese international infrastructure project known as the Belt and Road Initiative, as recently discussed in Bejing by "Auntie" May and the inscrutable bloke, given the timing ( see picture, below ).

The Kew site would make a nice new Hampton Court for our new "Uncle" X, once the aeroplanes are diverted to Prestwick and the railway lines removed, the grand little houses along Ruskin Avenue razed to the ground....

Seriously, I recall the barrier at the car park causing so much trouble back in about 2011 that Kew gave up and left it open, and I doubt that it would be economically viable even at the proposed rates. It would need a full-time person to patrol it.

There is a curious atmosphere at Kew these days and I will make my views known. The last time I did so, in a calm and even tone, I was told by a staff member that my comments were "unnecessary" ( but I went above their head and got what I wanted.)

Perhaps an AGM of WW2 T should be held at Kew, with everybody ordering the maximum number of files, throughout the day, after bringing their own breakfasts in 1940's style thermos flasks and playing housey-housey in the caff...

I'm not really joking in the slightest about the current trend to exclude visitors in person from Kew, but I find that it helps to vent my wrath. I am lucky in that I managed to see most of the files I wanted from WO 361 before they were placed in an exclusion zone by Kew's most-favoured-publishers. The Ministry of Defence is notorious for its inability to strike sensible procurement deals with suppliers, and Kew is equally as bad.

    Papiermache,

I don't understand, do you mean that the WO361 missing personnel files can no longer be accessed on site?

    Regards

    Tom

    Tom,

Below is the notice ( converted to plain text, my inverted commas added ) you find if you want to order some WO361 files, including a lot of files relating to the Far East. I've got a list somewhere.

There are notices at Kew which explain how you can download images from the Kew website but since I don't have a laptop, modern G4 mobile phone, or ipad, etc. the process excludes me, and as someone who never buys anything online I won't buy a subscription.

I can photograph digitised files " Available to view free at TNA" from screens at Kew but they are rather small and if you increase the size of the image it increases in size to such an extent that the whole of the original page cannot be seen without using a clunky tool to manipulate it. The process is very slow, and there are constant interruptions from FMP, urging you to buy a subscription.

These problems and problems with identifying the original file numbers from the FMP website have been discussed by representatives at TNA User Forum meetings but nothing has improved. Managers just say they'll do better next time.

I'm not an expert: I tend to look at other file series these days. Regular users would know more about the download process.

There are no photocopying machines at Kew any longer, or the free cameras you could use to photograph and send images to yourself.

    John

Tom, it's not the whole of WO361, but here is the plain text version I got from the FMP site in November 2017, which includes other TNA file series.

Finally, I recently took a photo of the instructions close to the bank of computers near the help desk opposite the first floor entrance. I've typed this out. I don't know how many Red Square monitors there are, about ten I should think.

In theory I could queue for a "monitor with a Red Square" and send something to myself. It would help if I could see the email on a portable device that TNA "will send within 15 to 30 minutes" so that I could check I've done everything properly, but strictly not necessary to see my inbox until reaching my home computer , over fifty miles away in my case....You live and learn.

Anyway, here is my transcription of the instructions sheet:

Downloading via a computer with a Red Square on the monitor.

    To save the document

    * Locate an electronic document that you wish to email to yourself ( or another person )

    * Download the document ( do not select "show images" )

    * Select the print icon from the top pf the page

    * Select either "current page", "selection of pages" or "whole document"

    * Press "print" at the bottom right of the pop up screen

    * In the new pop up Save menu select the option "Public-General"

    * Rename the file so that you can identify it when you want to send it - putting your initials at the end is a good idea.

    * If the file has a name like "Document download" you might also want to rename it.

    * Open the "downloads" folder and press "save".

    * Repeat the above for as many downloads as you want to send.

    To email the document

    * Open the send tool called "Send Transfer" located on the start button on the bottom left of the computer screen.

    * In the middle panel enter your email address at the top and the bottom.

    * Above the left-hand panel select " + Add files to transfer"

    * In the new pop up Save menu select the option "Public-General"

    * Open the "downloads" folder and press "open" for the files that you want to email.

    * Press "Send" underneath the right-hand panel in the Send Transfer Tool.

You should receive an email within 15 to 30 minutes with the links to your download.

You should download the links and save them to your device.

When you have finished your session you must log off the terminal by selecting the "start" button on the bottom left of the screen and selecting "Log off" in the panel next to it.

If you fail to do this subsequent users may be able to see your email address.

In this case, the "f" is silent, as in ffrench, or the p in P'Smith. It's still P'snowing here, or it could be ffreezing rain.

Come to the best party in London, free cheese and wine, just don't spill it on the Doomsday Book: National Archives hoping to launch bar and live music venue

Meanwhile services to readers are cut back, reduced document ordering hours, removal of self-service printers, staff cut backs, and car parking charges. A 1,000 years of British history in their hands and their strategic vision is cheese and wine parties and corporate events.

Since TNA was moved into the remit of Department for Digital, Culture, Media and also Sport, it's all gone a wee bit meh. I'm sure they know what they are doing though.

A five-bedroom house in Burlington Avenue may set you back about £1,500,000 in a never-ending mortgage on top of a massive deposit. Noise from the District Line tube trains and National Rail type trains, aircraft lowering landing-gear and engine noise, cars speeding along the main road, and now alcohol-fuelled orgies at the concrete monstrosity or Big Brother Pagoda we know and used to love as "Kew".

Yet it all sounds such a nice area to reside in , with street names such as Beechwood Avenue, Bessant Drive, Burlington Avenue, Defoe Avenue, Ruskin Avenue, Strand Drive, not forgetting the River Thames on your doorstep, if not yet actually covering your doorstep.....

Good luck to the local residents with their opposition: the agenda and background papers for next Monday's meeting are here ( got to page 19 ):

A word of warning about the file download service. I used the red marked computers last Friday and sent to myself, the resulting links to a number of documents relating to 619 Squadron. The link emails state they 'remain available' until 9 3 2018 which I read as midnight tonight!. On no they don't. I downloaded one at work at lunchtime today and at 7PM tonight at home, all the links are empty. Extremely frustrating but I guess they calculate it as 7 days starting from the download time which would have been early afternoon last Friday.

Did they get the licence? After Tuesdays debacle when the electric went out and we were all kicked out into the café, I refuse to call it a restaurant!, then a few updates but not looking like it was going to be resolved that quickly, I left and went to my daughters in Brentwood, what a bloody pain in the buttox of a journey! and then drama the following day while looking after my grandson!!! and don't get me started on the train home with hardly any air con!

Just had an email from them:
Car parking charges are delayed until mid-May!
They're trialling extra-late Thursday nights in June and July, closing at 2100 but last orders still 1600.

Not a lot of point having 5 hours of being open if you aren't able to order anything after 4pm...... think I will have to be a bit sneaky next time I go
