Hello Sarita, that's a new one on me that this sight is not secure. I'm almost 99% sure that others will agree.

    Hello Stuart,
when I next use the computer I shall take note and should the same occur I shall
take a screenshot and post it to you, likewise if this is not the case I shall let you know, hopefully things are as you would like

    Thanks Sarita

I have for the last few months been advised by my browser (Safari) that the site is not secure, each time I log in. Obviously, having been a member here for a good while, I know this is not the case. It is also happening when I log in to another related forum I frequent on a regular basis.

Not a problem so long as you dont enter any personal info/details on the main forum site, thats always the way with forum sites and is why we have usernames, is why we shouldnt use email address or at least replace @ with AT.

Its a public forum so cannot be secure

If you check out - http://ww2talk.com/index.php?online/ then you will see the headings :
    Everyone Members Guests Robots

If it was a secure site then only Members [I guess] would be allowed in and that others searching for details of relatives etc etc would not have access unless they joined, but they couldnt join because they wouldnt know the information was there.

Don't think we''re an encrypted site, so if you try and open us with https at the beginning of the URL rather than http, it can trigger this error.
The security certificate there is apparently that of the hosting company rather than a dedicated one for here. Modern browsers can be antsy about this.

Will have a word with Otto, but I'm confident this is an annoying configuration thing rather than any real issue as he's paranoid about security since the attacks on 2F years ago & checks the place regularly for any nastiness.

Neither Firefox nor Panda AV give me any sort of warnings here and they refuse to access some sites and forums.

I suspect that the greatest risk here is of being bored to death by narrowly-focussed obsessives !

I was probably talking to myself, but seeing as you've chipped in...If the hat fits, wear it, is the standard advice in this sort of situation :)

The hat fits alright, in fact it is pretty well wedged on. :)

Google Chrome now lists all non-https websites as 'non secure'. The data exchanged between a user and the website is not encrypted.

This is mostly a concern when sending or retrieving personal information with the website, e.g. your email address and password when logging in to a site. If someone is snooping on the network then this information is viewable in plain text, for example perhaps when connected to a public, unsecured wifi network in an airport or hotel.

This article written a couple of years ago is an interesting read about the topic. It also makes the very valid point that whilst an https connection is secure, it doesn't mean that the web site itself is.

HTTPS is not a magic bullet for Web security
