Is there a list of people who were members of the General Staff during WW2? In particular I'm trying to determine the name of "DSD" (Director of Staff Duties, I assume?) in the summer of 1942.
DSD of which command? Stanley Woodburn Kirby was DSD India Command in mid-1942. John Chapman was DSD LHQ, replaced by Charles LLoyd in 08/1942. I suspect this is not the answer that you were looking for, in which case I suggest that you check the relevant Army List, which should provide full details.
Hi Jitter, what was "LHQ"? The context is a meeting of the Tank Board in the UK. There is no attendance list given, and then some very useful comments by "DSD". Chris
The post I often see listed is Director of Staff Duties at the War Office. (Then) Acting Maj-Gen Alexander 'Sandy' Galloway took the role in May 1942. He later commanded 4th Ind Div. Alexander Galloway - Wikipedia I've never heard of the officer he replaced, but here's the list: War Office
That's brilliant! Thank you very much! Here are his cogent remarks during a discussion about whether some anti-tank artillery should be self-propelled. e.g. someone else said that since some tanks would have 17-pounders, there was no need for 17-pounder SPs. “in considering the handling of armoured formations as a whole, additional anti-tank artillery was necessary[sic] quite distinct from the guns in the tanks. It was for decision whether a proportion of this additional artillery should not be S.P. There would be occasions when anti-tank arty was required quickly in action and this could best be done from the S.P. mounting. There was also the question of training. It was presumably easier to train S.P. anti-tank crews rather than tank crews proper.”
