I thought that these might prove to be interesting. They are two flyers for Cinema shows in Johore Bahru in Malaya. Nothing particularly extraordinary but it nice to know that they have survived. The back of one flyer has adverts in Chinese and the other, Chinese and Urdu. Shrew 007.JPG

Each of the flyers seem to have been posted in small, homemade envelopes, Shrew 003.JPG

But what is the most interesting thing to me is that both of the envelopes are made from Japanese maps of Burma. Shrew 011.JPG

Some interesting typos on the flyer - particularly the type of 'amusement' on offer...

And the 'Urdu' is Malay Jawi script, according to the one who knows.

My Urdu isn't what it was, actually it is exactly as it was, non-existent. Jawi, like Urdu obviously uses Arabic script.

The Japanese maps were presumably recycled owing to paper shortages in the immediate post war period. The maps were probably left behind after the Surrender. Interesting that High Wood refers to the one covering Katha. This was not that far from Pinwe, a much fought over town which was finally back in British hands at the end of 1944.Katha was where 9th Royal Sussex spent Christmas, on the Banks of the Irrawady, crossing on 26th Dec and raising the Union Flag on the far side.

Going back to the flyer for the movies, I spotted "BETTL DAVIS" as the lead in "Juarez". Did the printer run out of "E"s I wonder?

I was in Kathmandu many years ago where I saw a film poster for Annie Hall starring Woody Alien.
