    Hi,

I've been trying to find out about my grandmother's uncle's service in the second world war for a while now but haven't had much to go on until we found some photographs of him in uniform a while back. I'm currently in the process of requesting his service records from the MOD thanks to some helpful advice on the WW2FORUM, but thought I'd upload the photos I have here just to see if anyone can identify or recognise the uniform in the meantime.

His name was Alfred Martin and was from Southampton. He's in the centre in the one in front of that statue and in the group one he is the extreme left, second row from back staring at the camera with a mole on his cheek.

    Thanks in advance,

Based on the grenade over the stripes and the roundish cap badge - possibly Royal Engineers?

    Hi again Terry

As previously mentioned the best way to start answering your questions will be to obtain his service records the link for forms etc is Request records of deceased service personnel these will tell you who he served with, when and where. From those details the picture can be built including sorting out which War Diaires you might need to read/copy.

    Good luck

    Hey,
I've just recieved his war record through, took ages to come through. So he was a Pioneer stevedore in the royal engineers. His army number was 14,375,092 and His reg was 1306692. I will attach scans of the documents when I get a chance at work

Also for the time being would anyone be able to help me decipher the attached photos? I'm struggling to read some of the shorthand. I know he was attached to the 8th army in North Africa and Sicily.

Also, now I know a bit more about his history where could I upload the photos with the other soldiers in for anyone who may have family in similar units to be able to see them in case they have family in them?

His service number is 14375092 there are no commas in it, the one image shows he was working for 991 Port Operating Company (when & where will be in his detailed records) but the rest can wait until you have uploaded his full service records

One question. What does NON B.C. stand for? Non battle combatant? It seems to be repeated a lot throughout.

I think it's non battle casualty.
Could you give an example ?

We do have members here who provide TNA file copying services if you need - at very reasonable rates as well

    TD

Agree with Owen NBC = Non Battle Casualty
