Hi ! For sure I'm in the right forum , I need some help to identify the unit , that have been for sure engraved in the battlefield . As you can see from the picture , I have this gun from a long time in original condition , it is a webley Mk VI in 455 made in 1915 and I'm sure this pistol have seen a lot of action . On the barrel there is a faint engraved for sure made by the owner , and from what i can read it is : " M.C.S 24 R.I FG Pearson His Gun Somebody can help me to identify the unit or may the soldier ? tks Riccardo
Where did you obtain the gun, i.e country, area. Could you also upload a better picture of the name as it seems to me it might be 'L' or 'F' or 'E' - from some angles I read 'E' others I read 'L' ................................ A quick look at Ancestry shows Pearsons in most theatres of war so knowing where you obtained the gun might help Examples to show some of the complexity: Name: L. G. Pearson Military Year: 1932 Regiment: Indian Medical Service Rank: Major Name: L G Pearson Military Year: 1914-1920 Rank: Captain Medal Awarded: British War Medal and Victory Medal Regiment or Corps: Royal Army Medical Corps UK, Navy Lists, 1888-1970 Name: L G Pearson Year: 1942 Book Title: Navy List: October, 1942 UK, Royal Air Force Muster Roll, 1918 Name: F G Pearson Muster Date: 29 Jan 1916 Service Number: 20460 TD
Hi TD thank you for you prompt reply , here it is a bigger size picture of the name that could be also Peahson I'm gun collector leave in Italy and bought it here KR Riccardo
If its E G then there is one listed in CWGC: PEARSON EDWARD GEOFFREY Second Lieutenant 326352 Royal Ulster Rifles Sunday, December 3, 1944 Age 26 VENRAY WAR CEMETERY IV. E. 13.
What a pleasing item. You have to wonder if there'd been some mess shenanigans with people not picking up the right revolvers...
Trouble is there is nothing to say whoever the owner was, died during the war or lost the revolver in action, he may have kept it and went to live in Italy after the war. Its also possible he [assume its a he] might have come to Italy with the Indian Army, South Africans, ANZAC's We are also assuming he was in Italy during the war Certainly looks more like 'F' or 'E' as the first initial but what the meaning is of the letters and numbers are before that - I dont know, but may help solve the problem TD
Lateral thinking. Is the first group MGS (Machine Gun Section??) 24 RI (Royal Irish/Royal Inniskillings??). Tim
