    Name CREIGHTON
    First Names Allan David
    Rank P/O
    Service RCAF
    Service Number J19870
    Crew Position Air Gunner
    Age 26
    Date of Death 22/06/1944
    Cemetery Rheinberg War Cemetery Germany

    P/O Creighton's DFC:
The award was presented by the Canadian Governor General tohis next-of-kin on the 10th December 1947. The citation calls him a pilot, but the casualty list and training school list make clear he was an air gunner.

Pilot Officer Creighton, as pilot [sic] , has completed numerous operations against the enemy in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude and devotion to duty.

Note: Although letters of condolence were often standard, the following excerpt from a letter dated 22nd June 1944 from the Commanding Officer, No.49 Squadron, to his widow may explain his award in some part:

"During the time your husband has been with the squadron he has taken part in many operational sorties, and he has shown himself to be a very efficient and keen air gunner who was always willing to
give the benefit of his knowledge and experience to the new gunners as they came to the squadron."

    Ft/Lt Kenneth F J Winchester DFC RAFVR.

Kenneth Winchester was posted to 103 Squadron at Elsham Wolds on the 12th October 1941 from 15 OTU at Harwell and flew 10 ops as co-pilot with his pal |Ken Wallis. He was Ken Wallis’ best man at his wedding.
He was made captain of his own crew in June 42 and completed 14 ops being lost on his 15th. He was awarded a DFC which was Gazetted 21st Aug 1942.

103 Squadron detailed 11 aircraft for this attack on the German city of Cologne. Conditions were cloudy but with good visibility and in the target area nil to 8/10ths with big gaps.
Flak was intense but not co-operating with searchlights which did not appear to be able to cone and this is thought to be due to the use of the IFF jamming device by our aircraft.. Balloons were observed at 6000 ft. F/L Winchester and crew and F/L Parker and crew failed to return. All other aircraft returned to base.

Rank, Pilot – died aged 25 – 103 Sqn - Son of Percy Talbot Winchester and Leonora Winchesters of Battersea, London; husband of Madge Mary Winchester of Battersea - Buried Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany.

Grave Inscription - At the Going Down of the Sun and in the Morning, we will remember them.

Sgt Bernard William Vaughan DFM RAFVR

Bernard William Vaughan was 35 years of age at the time of his death and not 43 as shown on the CWGR. However 35 is still old for aircrew duties. Also his parents listed by the CWGR are incorrect.
Bernard was born in 1907 in Kingston-on-Thames and later lived in Margate with his parents and 3 siblings.
Sadly his father died in 1912 and his mother in 1916. As a young man he worked in an office in Birmingham and then went to Australia. He later returned to England and settled in the Birmingham area.
At this time he married his wife Elizabeth in 1932 and they had 2 children - Marjorie Elizabeth and Ian Frederic. Tragically his wife and children were killed in bombing in December 1940. Also his brother Reginald was killed a year later. Reginald was a commissioned air gunner with 144 Squadron and had been awarded a DFC.
It is not clear at what stage Bernard joined the RAF. By October 1942 he was a very experienced air gunner having been on ops since early 1942 and had regularly flown with P/O J F Brookes plus a few others. When he was killed he must have been approaching the end of his tour. Bernard was awarded a DFM which was gazetted on the 6th November 1942.

Ft/Lt Kenneth F J Winchester DFC (Previous post was his pilot) and is buried close to him at Rhienberg Cemetery.

    Ft Sgt Arthur Cox DFM

This Halifax returned to base safely but lost four of its crew on a raid to Duisburg/Germany on 8/9 April 1943.
They were hit by flak on return and the Halifax had all the engines quit and go into spin. Second Pilot, P/O G. BISSON, RCAF, Flt.Eng Sgt A. WHITTERON, RCAF, Midupper F/Sgt W. WAGNER, RCAF and the reargunner F/Sgt A. COX, RAF, all bailed out.

P/O Stovel was able to get the Halifax under control at 1,000 feet and three engines were started again. This process was completed one more time, before they safely made it back to base.

P/O G.E. BISSON, J/16354 was PoW (L3/1075), Sgt A. WHITTERON, R/66720 was PoW (357/1052), F/Sgt W.A. WAGNER, R/126995 was PoW (4B/1046), unfortunately F/Sgt Arthur COX, RAF(VR) 952028, DFM was killed and initially buried on 14th April 1943 at Monchengladbach (Hauptfriedhof), after the war exhumed and reburied in the Rheinberg War Cemetery.

J16835 P/O Clifford Campbell Stovel was awarded an immediate Distinguished Flying Cross for bringing this No. 405 Squadron aircraft home.

He was then posted to No. 408 Squadron and by 28 July 1943 was a Flight Lieutenant. On 28 July 1943 while on ops to Hamburg his aircraft, Halifax DT749 EQ-O, was shot down. Of the crew of eight, Stovel and four crew were killed, three survived to become POWs.
