    Hello All
If Peter was with the 658 A.W coy from the 21/1/43

Who was he with prior to that date, its says he Disembarked M.E ( with my limited knowledge would that be Middle East) 21/9/42.

On his service records in the column marked Unit it says...DCoy 2(fd) D.D.R.E. Would this be the unit he was with.......or have i got it wrong again

    Regards

    Kim

    Hi Kim

Can you upload a copy of the page you are looking at, from past experience it is better to read in context the items/abbreviations another member is wanting clarification on

It looks as though they should all read DBRE, and I assume he was attached to that unit until Dec 1943 when he was posted to 658 G C Coy - which I take to mean 658 General Construction Company

Personally I'm not sure what DBRE is unless its something along the lines of Depot Base Royal Engineers (based in Halifax by the looks of it). It also seems as soon as he landed he ended up in hospital for the best part of 3 months

Thanks TD, so he was in hospital as soon as he arrived in the Middle East then after his release he joined the 658 GC Coy

    Well not quite

21 Sep 42 disembarked ME (Middle East)
24 Oct 42 Admitted to Hospital
14 Nov 42 Discharged from Hospital
    26 Dec 42 Posted from X4 to 658
    02 Jan 43 Posted to 658 from X4

The last 2 are a little confusing to me but I guess it may mean he had a few days off over Xmas from leaving the Holding Battalion which would be normal after an X4 until he was officially posted to 658

Below is the X4 list for NZ troops but would be the same for British as it was based on the British system
THE X (iv) LIST comprises all unposted reinforcements and incoming reinforcement drafts. Personnel discharged from NZ Reception Depot (x(ii)) to Training Depots, fit for duty, are transferred to the X (iv) list of their corps, until posted to a unit, when they are struck off X (iv) and taken on unit strength. Reinforcements in transit between the Base and a unit remain on X (iv) (and the Base Depot strength) until they actually reach and are taken on the strength by the unit to which they are proceeding. Escaped PsW [Prisoners of War] who until such escape have been on the X (iii) list are transferred to X (iv) list on reaching their respective training depots.

Thank you very much TD for taking the time to look at the service record, that has cleared that up, and I understand what you wrote.

Good as I might need you to explain it to me

If you havent already - your next move would be to obtain the war diaries that match his units. I acant find a 658 Gen Const Coy WD for 1943 all I can find is
Royal Engineers: 658 Artisan Works Company (RE Art Wks Coy) | The National Archives
    Reference: WO 169/10735
    Description:
Royal Engineers: 658 Artisan Works Company (RE Art Wks Coy)
    Date: 1943 Jan.- Dec.
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
    Legal status: Public Record(s)

There is one however for 1942
Royal Engineers: 658 General Construction Company (RE) | The National Archives
    Reference: WO 169/5339
    Description:
Royal Engineers: 658 General Construction Company (RE)
    Date: 1942 Jan.- Dec.
Held by: The National Archives, Kew
    Legal status: Public Record(s)

We do have members who almost reside in Kew, they may or may not already have these WD's, obviously if they dont have them then with the current problem it may be difficult to obtain them quickly. I can provide the names if thats the route you want to go down

Thanks again TD i have been in touch with Drew and when the Archives opens again i think he is getting them for me.

I am a bit stuck on his time with the 7th R.N.F , if you have any ideas on his time with the B.E.F i would appreciate your input.

when he was transferred to 3 Corps HQ we think he was posted to 51st Division (Highland). But he came home on the 1-6-40, so we are not sure if he was posted else were, as they stayed in France till later.
