I agree - strangely worded article. I'd seen reports elsewhere that pointed out that Beavers had been introduced to Scotland a few years ago and that this was now being effectively 'rolled out' to parts of England. Sloppy journalism I guess - possibly a geography and history lesson required with the title 'do you know the difference between Britain, Great Britain, the British Isles and the United Kingdom....?'

Bring back the Short Faced Cave Bear! Twice as large as a polar bear it was , would certainly add some spice to the right to roam!

We have enough trouble with non-native species of flora and fauna in the U.K.! The European Brown Bear is big enough thank you.

Confusion reigns. There are two separate species so far as I can see:-

Cave Bear - native to Europe and Asia, the size of a large brown bear or polar bear and largely herbivore and
Short Faced Bear - native to the Americas, mostly carnivorous and one of the biggest bears that ever lived.

A bit of a roller coaster at the moment. While we have had lockdown restrictions relaxed a bit (can by booze and fags) other countries are going the other way. Some infection rates are climbing at a very scary rate.

Ah yes....the well known drink developed by a chap who fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution and a company now owned by Diageo based in the U.K. Excellent case of truly international cooperation. Hic....

    Coronapocalypse in Holland
" ... the virus is not done with us"

    Weekly update (week 11 - 18 Aug):
The number of people with established COVID-19 steadily rises. Last week, 4.013 new individuals were reported who tested positive for COVID-19. That is 23 less than the week before. In the past week, 50 patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19. There were 16 COVID-deaths.

Meanwhile it is also clear that the disease for young people is by no means the innocent flu that activists like to make of it: the Dutch Facebook group "Corona patients with long-term complaints" counts more than 14 thousand members now. These are often younger ex-patients, who, even after mild Covid complaints, still suffer with debilitating complaints such as extreme fatigue, headache, shortness of breath and memory loss, .

    Numbers now are:
week 1 - 7 July: 19 new deaths, total now 6.132; number of confirmed cases 50.705
week 8 - 14 July: 8 deaths, total now 6.140; number of confirmed cases 51.239
week 14 - 21 July: 7 deaths, total now 6.147; number of confirmed cases 52.226
week 21 - 28 July: 9 deaths, total bow 6.156; number of confirmed cases 53.555
week 28 July - 4 Aug: 6 deaths, total now 6.162; number of confirmed cases 56.143
week 5 - 11 Aug: 9 deaths, total now 6.171; number of confirmed cases 60.179
week 11 - 18 Aug: 16 deaths, total now 6.187; number of confirmed cases 64.192

For comparison the (official) mortality rate caused by Covid per million of inhabitants:
(based on the deaths registered by the John Hopkins University)

    Belgium
(11,4 mln) with 9.944 deaths, it is 872,28
UK (66,5 mln) this number, with 41.454 deaths, is 623,37
Spain (46,7 mln), with 28.646 deaths, is 613,41
Italy (60,4 mln) with 35.400 deaths, the number is 586,09
Sweden (10,2 mln) with 5.787 deaths is 567,35
USA (327,2 mln) with 170.557 deaths, it is 521,26
France (67,0 mln) with 30.434 deaths, is 454,24
Holland (17,2 mln) with 6.187 deaths, it now is 359,71
Canada (37,1 mln) with 9.080 deaths is 244,74
Germany (82,9 mln) with 9.240 deaths is 111,46

Population numbers (courtesy SteveDee) Coronavirus deaths per million by country 2020 | Statista. Some countries - like Belgium - include suspected Covid deaths that were not tested. The official corona mortality of various countries is therefore less comparable.

Belgium still is the relatively hardest hit country in Europe and maybe world-wide (a sky-high death rate of 872+ per million inhabitants - but Belgium has been very strict with itself. It counts not only deaths after a positive test, but also of those who showed symptoms that indicate the virus. The UK and Spain make a good second and third.
The rates in Sweden, the only country in Europe that gambled for group immunity and decided not to lock down, are now almost up to the Italian rates.
The deaths in the USA are now fast on the rise (approx. 1.000 a day). The death rate now is well beyond that of France. Is the US heading for a Swedish/Italian scenario? If so this will mean a number of 180.000 - 190.000 deaths.
Germany, where the virus spread at the same time as in Holland, is doing extremely well. The country has a more disciplined population and does a lot of testing, contact tracing and isolating

'Twas an evening in October, I'll confess I wasn't sober,
I was carting home a load with manly pride,
When my feet began to stutter and I fell into the gutter,
And a pig came up and lay down by my side.
Then I lay there in the gutter and my heart was all a-flutter,
Till a lady, passing by, did chance to say:
"You can tell a man that boozes by the company he chooses,"
Then the pig got up and slowly walked away.

Pig obviously afraid of catching Covid

I've taken to thinking people who throw themselves into planters, roadways, snickets etc. in a dramatic & panicked attempt to distance in shops, pavements & the like, are in fact merely showing subservience to my obvious kingly magnificence.

Bit like Sir Brian when he 'went among the villagers'. (Disregarding his comeuppance.)

    It's quite good fun.
