Finally made a visit. Very cold and windy day on the water but the inside of the ship was well heated. Surprised.

Very sketchy, dangerous neighborhood for blocks around but I guess you can't park a battleship anywhere.

When starting to walk towards the bow I noticed that there were no range finder hoods on the forward turret. I later asked a volunteer about them and he said the range finder had been removed in 1947 because of too much spray in rough seas and that it then shared the range finder with the second turret

I transferred from the NJ to Missouri "a few years ago." Biggest kick was winning a three gun salvo in the Navy Relief raffle. Those caps were well and truly popped.

I thought I'd posted the few pics we took of the USS New Jersey from our visit to Philadelphia back in August 2019 but it turns out I didn't .
We were staying in Cherry Hill, NJ, we parked in the Waterfront multi-story car park & got the ferry over to Philly.

USS Olympia, Commodore Dewey's flagship in the Spanish-American War. There is a set of brass footprints on the bridge where Dewey was standing when he said, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley." (I stood in them 40 years ago and said it, of course)
The Olympia carried the US unknown soldier back to the United States after WWI.

I wanted to get a good view of the area on the New Jersey that matched the surrender deck on sister Missouri.

Here is what the Japanese envoys saw as they were going towards the ladder to the second level

    upload_2023-1-12_12-47-37.png

    upload_2023-1-12_12-48-50.png

Just over the top of the ladder. The surrender table would have been about where the white rolled up tarp is. Ladder must have been difficult for Foreign Minister Shigemitsu with his prosthetic leg

    upload_2023-1-12_12-57-26.png

About where the Japanese envoys were standing. Teak deck replacement has been completed in this area and looks great.

Some views of one of the few hatches in the armored deck, which is one or two levels down from the outside (weather) deck. It is seven inches thick and covers the engines and ammunition. The ends and sides of the citadel are 12"

This is a steam to water heat exchanger for potable hot water. I worked for the manufacturer, Aerco International, for most of the eighties and probably inspected this one before it went out. Manufacturing plant was in Northvale, NJ and the bronze foundry for the upper and lower heads was in Brooklyn.
