Was your uncle born in 1922 in Stoke and Wolstanton district, Staffordshire to Charles Storer NELSON and Mary NELSON (Nee Hackney)

The thread was trying to establish that basic information.

 

I don't know if you feel it important, but your uncle ISN'T commemorated on the Chichester Roll of Honour, if that's where he or his family were living.
Your uncle isn't easy to trace but there seems to be only one Charles S Nelson, and that's the one noted above, registered 3rd Quarter of 1922 and mothers maiden name was Hackney. The reason some thought he may have been Scottish is that it was a common practice to use a maiden surname (mother/grandmother) as a middle name to keep the link to both sides of the family.
Glad you added that additional information, thanks for the knowledge, and I hope you can take some solace that he wasn't forgotten, we did our best to flesh him out as it were.

 

Good morning, yes he was born in Stoke, that is my grandparents. They lived at 26 Whyke Road Chichester. I was born in Littlehampton in 1952 and we lived in Chichester for a while. My name is Paula Nelson(maiden name) . Mary Nelson came to Australia with us in 1963 but returned to U.K. In 1969 in which year she died. Grandfather Charles S Nelson died in 1961. My Father would have been very honored that his brothers memory has been resurrected and not forgotten, he was his older brother and all we ever knew was he was shot down over the English Channel, I do have a certificate from Runnymede that. I found for myself a few years ago. My Father was Roy Mitchell Nelson born 24/9/1929. We were told that Charles was killed on his 21st Birthday but I am not sure yet on his birthdate.

This would make him 21 on the date your uncle's death so looks likely to confirm the family story.

Another minor tragedy in all the losses in WW2, on his 21st birthday....
The aircraft wreckage seems to have been located near the entrance to the Kiel Canal, so there could be a bit more information from German newspaper reports at that time, if it adds anything to what has already been posted.

Good stuff, all. I think 52 Clarence Square might be what is now the Prince Of Wales pub, just by the western end of Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton, should anyone ever wonder! Paula, by way of a small Sussex coincidence, I see your dad was born one day before mine; my father also had an older brother on ops in the RAF, though thankfully he survived.

I am wondering why he would be in the Army [especially enlisting in the Middx Regt] when he seemed to already have a life at sea and would probably have served better there. It could be also that there was more than onw Charles Nelson and somewhere there has been a slight mix up - could be an interesting bit of research for you ??

Doubt this is the poem, dated to 1944 and a member of staff of the General Accident Insurance Co, but it does reference "the gallant Eighth"...

So his mother would have to have a LOT of Scottish influence to write a poem like that - and the General Accident was principally in Perth (Scotland - not WA!)

 

I beleive if you contact the CWGC and provide them copies of his and his parents Birth, marriage certs etc, they would tell you what they need, they would update the online database with age and parents name and place of residence. Such certs can be ordered online from General Register Office (GRO) - Official information on births, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths tho there may be time frame restrictions, its still available via the GRO.
