    Hi PDurrant

Was your uncle born in 1922 in Stoke and Wolstanton district, Staffordshire to Charles Storer NELSON and Mary NELSON (Nee Hackney)

The thread was trying to establish that basic information.

I don't know if you feel it important, but your uncle ISN'T commemorated on the Chichester Roll of Honour, if that's where he or his family were living.
Your uncle isn't easy to trace but there seems to be only one Charles S Nelson, and that's the one noted above, registered 3rd Quarter of 1922 and mothers maiden name was Hackney. The reason some thought he may have been Scottish is that it was a common practice to use a maiden surname (mother/grandmother) as a middle name to keep the link to both sides of the family.
Glad you added that additional information, thanks for the knowledge, and I hope you can take some solace that he wasn't forgotten, we did our best to flesh him out as it were.

Good morning, yes he was born in Stoke, that is my grandparents. They lived at 26 Whyke Road Chichester. I was born in Littlehampton in 1952 and we lived in Chichester for a while. My name is Paula Nelson(maiden name) . Mary Nelson came to Australia with us in 1963 but returned to U.K. In 1969 in which year she died. Grandfather Charles S Nelson died in 1961. My Father would have been very honored that his brothers memory has been resurrected and not forgotten, he was his older brother and all we ever knew was he was shot down over the English Channel, I do have a certificate from Runnymede that. I found for myself a few years ago. My Father was Roy Mitchell Nelson born 24/9/1929. We were told that Charles was killed on his 21st Birthday but I am not sure yet on his birthdate.

    From the 1939 Register:
    55 Westgate, Chichester
    NELSON, Charles S / dob 29 Oct 1888 (86) / married / night watchman / ARP Chichester RDC
NELSON, Molly / dob 20 Jan 1898 / married / unpaid domestic duties
    + 2 closed records

    There is also:
    52 Clarence Sq, Brighton
    NELSON, Charles / dob 2 Oct 1922 / single / hotel porter

This would make him 21 on the date your uncle's death so looks likely to confirm the family story.

Another minor tragedy in all the losses in WW2, on his 21st birthday....
The aircraft wreckage seems to have been located near the entrance to the Kiel Canal, so there could be a bit more information from German newspaper reports at that time, if it adds anything to what has already been posted.
RIP Charles and his crew mates :poppy::poppy::poppy::poppy::poppy::poppy::poppy:

Good stuff, all. I think 52 Clarence Square might be what is now the Prince Of Wales pub, just by the western end of Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton, should anyone ever wonder! Paula, by way of a small Sussex coincidence, I see your dad was born one day before mine; my father also had an older brother on ops in the RAF, though thankfully he survived.

    Cheers, Pat

    Hi Paula

So you think this would be him

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
    Name: Charles S Nelson
Regiment or Corps: Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment, Machine Gun Corps, The King's (Liverpool) Regiment
    Regimental Number: 900, 166440, 91228
    30850_A001143-00036.jpg

and yet prior to the war he was at sea
    Liverpool, England, Crew Lists 1861-1919
    Name: Charles Storer Nelson
    Age: 23
    Birth Year: abt 1886
    Birth Place: Liverpool
    Event Date: 26 Oct 1909
Port of Registry: Liverpool, Lancashire, England
    Ship Name: Dominic
    Official Number: 105350
    Reference Number: 387CRE/277

There is also another file but the date of birth is slightly different
Name Nelson, Charles Place of Birth: Liverpool, Lancashire Number: ES 302 ... | The National Archives
    Reference: BT 377/7/129702
    Description:
    Name Nelson, Charles
    Place of Birth: Liverpool, Lancashire
    Number: ES 302
Date of Birth: 18 October 1888
    Date: [1908-1958]
Closure status: Open Document, Open Description

I am wondering why he would be in the Army [especially enlisting in the Middx Regt] when he seemed to already have a life at sea and would probably have served better there. It could be also that there was more than onw Charles Nelson and somewhere there has been a slight mix up - could be an interesting bit of research for you ??

Doubt this is the poem, dated to 1944 and a member of staff of the General Accident Insurance Co, but it does reference "the gallant Eighth"...
    Ane' O' Montgomery's men
by General Accident member of staff, c 1944
Saw ye the lad wi' the Balmoral bonnet?
Sae jauntily crocked wi' the hackle upon it,
Just tak a guid look an' ye'll ken him again,
    I'll warrant he's ane o' Montgomery's men.
Sae bronzed an' sae fit (he's been oot in the East),
That's tiny bit ribbon denotes that are least,
There'll aye be a welcome in toon or in glen,
When they find he is ane o' Montgomery's men.
The gallant Eighth Army-immortal their fame,
Their deeds will resound when we welcome them hame,
The laddie ye see, neither boastful nor vain,
Nae doot he'll be ane o' Montgomery's men.
God grant it guid lad, ye'll come back frae the strife,
An' maybe ye'll settle an' tak' a wee wife,
An' if ye should live to be three score an' ten,
They'll sae he was ane o' Montgomery's men.

So his mother would have to have a LOT of Scottish influence to write a poem like that - and the General Accident was principally in Perth (Scotland - not WA!)
