I would have gladly posted the war diaries of 14 Foresters, but ( i have yet) to get them. It will complete the diaries that i have for the First Division in the Anzio Campaign. I would say that you could try & obtain a rather rare copy of the History of the Sherwood Foresters, but that would not give you much joy. I could be wrong on that though.

One thing i will say is that 18 Brigade took one hell of a kicking, after taking over from 24 Guards Brigade. 18 Brigade lost 1019 men-
Killed, wounded & Missing (14 Foresters = 394!) Source, page 172 APPENDIX `B' Anzio Campaign Battle Casualties. History of The First Division Anzio Campaign Jan-June 45.

If you are interested, then i will take a photo of the headstones of these chaps when I'm out in Anzio in June. That is if someone else can provide them before then.

    Regards,
Stu. Edit.. Just clocked that you have mentioned 1st Bn on your second chap. I'm not sure about that. 2nd Battalion may be?

TD You can order death certs for service personnel , they come back as accident , illness or war operations. If they die after injury later they list a c.o.d. I have ordered quite a few , but at £14 a go it soon racks up.

Both men KIA , no detail obviously but least it rules out accident or illness.

David, the last paragraph on page 113 Italy--ll looks quite interesting. Not sure has to how the 2 Foresters came by those Battle Casualties? If you can call it a honour, then it goes to the 1 DWR.. See Full Image below.

    Stu.

We have walked the ground that 2 FORESTERS mounted their attack on Campoleone.

Worry not, we will walk the ground together again in June.

Very interested to read the battalion history of the 14th Battalion Sherwood Foresters as I own the GSM Palestine (pre war)/LSGC/WW2 medal group to 4971847 Company Sergeant Major A J Shaw, who was wounded at Anzio on 20th March 1944. He is not mentioned by name in the battalion history, but I was wondering if anyone had the war diary to check if he was mentioned in that - being a senior rank. Also if was wondering if his name is mentioned in any other Sherwood Foresters documents that members own. He was a sergeant for his pre war Palestine tour (1st Battalion) but probably returned to the UK after the tour to join the 14th Battalion when they were formed in 1940.
Thanks to any members who can help

Only been able to have a quick look at War Diary, and i can't see him mentioned by name but entry for 20th March 1015am as follows:-
'C Coy report 5 casualties from enemy light mors. (incl CSM).'

When i get a bit more time later on this week i'll try have a proper look at the WD's (only got Feb & Mar 44) and the missing personnel file of the 14 Foresters.

David, is this book by Brigadier C.N. Barclay, C.B.E., D.S.O. ? He did one on the London Scottish & the Duke of Wellingtons if it is? He's probably done some other regiments..

I will have a look at the 14 Foresters War diaries has i have them. Clanky Pencil may come back before me. I do know that they are quite detailed in parts has to what I've read up to press.

    Hi Dr
Hi dryan67! You dont have access to the pages before this do you? they look to be for 2 FORS actions whom fought alongside a relative of mine in the Dukes at the time of his death. If you are able to point me in the right direction id be forever grateful!

    Pete.

I have info on 1 DWR at Anzio. What are you looking for?

In case you were not aware, they were in 3 Infantry Brigade with 2 FORESTERS and 1 KSLI.

They got into a terrible scrap securing and then defending the Campoleone Salient in late Jan/early Feb 44. They were forced to withdraw but left all their heavy weapons behind.

    Regards

Hi Frank thanks for your message!

David has very kindly sent me lots of pages from history books and filled in many blanks so far! (Fors and Dwo books)

My great Uncle met his demise in operation ‘ant’ of the 2 Fors and 1 DOW attacking Pontini objectives 22 May 1944. I have the operation plans including grid references, war diaries indicating Coy losses etc. My ideal goal would be to work out what Coy he was in and get a better understanding on the details surrounding his death (might be optimistic!) so any information you may have from around this date would be very useful!

Im going to avoid the desperate urge I have to ask for any info you may be able to share on the Salient subject as my wife is already wondering if I have lost the plot haha!

I have 3 other great uncles who lost lives in different theatres of ww2 so I suspect this may be a new pastime if mine!

    Best Regards
    Pete

I have just seen this thread. I was in Anzio in April this year and as it happens visited these graves. I went round every single one in both cemeteries. They lie in a beautiful place which is well looked after and so peaceful. I was visiting the graves of my grandfather’s friends and I know he would have been proud of how they are all cared for there.
