Hi, I have a 'Diary of transference record' with the information: No. 7836172 Rank TPR Unit R.A.C 4.T.S.B.D Diagnosis I.D.K LT Area 4 Does anyone have any idea what any of this means please? It belonged to my great granddad but I can't find any of his records on any war record sites. He drove tanks in WW2 That's all I know really and he passed away a few of years ago.
Hi Elise You will NOT find any WW2 service records online, some sites draw you in with the impression that they hold records but in fact it is the MOD who have them. If you want a copy you need to fill in the forms found at this link - Request records of deceased service personnel, include a cheque and also a copy of his death certificate [data protection laws], you do not need a service number but if you have one it will help corroborate the details on the form you have filled in The RAC is for Royal Armoured Corps and his rank TPR is for Trooper - but for certainty the rest needs to be read from his service records, guesswork needs too be avoided TD
Wellcome Library | Diary of transference Envelope to contain a patient's field medical card (Form W3118)
The only real reference I can find to 'I D K' as a diagnosis is - Internal Derangement of the Knee - which might tie in with the medical card and the Lt meaning 'light' This where the records become invaluable TD
Army Forms & Attestations: Army Form W.3118 - Field Medical Card Army Field Medical Card W3118 : Lance Corporal A H Lee, 3 Machine Gun Company, AIF Field medical card : Army form W3118 A few of these seem to be related to WW1, but perhaps were carried over to WW2, can I ask the date of birth? IF (big if) the number 7836172 is a service number: http://www.corpsofmilitarypolice.org/tools/armynumber?query=7836172 Do you wish to give a name as it is possible, especially if he was injured, he may appear in WW2 casualty lists. Nevertheless, if you are interested in researching his army career then service records, as suggested above, are the way to go.
7886172 Trooper A. TOMLINSON 7th Royal Tank Regiment R.A.C. ? Captured 20.6.1942 Campo PG 54 PoW no. 129826 Stalag VIIA
Good find Guy, perhaps Elise could confirm the correct man? 7886172 TOMLINSON Tpr A, 7 RTR date of casualty 20.6.1942 Middle East/Cyrenacia Casualty List 885 dated 25 July 1942, Reported missing Casualty list 970 dated 2 November 1942, Previously reported missing now POW Casualty list 1792 dated 26 June 1945, Previously reported POW in German hands now not POW If we are on the right track then someone around here may be able to advise what action the regiment were involved in on 20 June 1942. The casualty lists report a very large number of RTR men missing that day.
UK, British Prisoners of War, 1939-1945 Name: A Tomlinson Rank: Trooper Army Number: 7886172 Regiment: Reconnaissance Corps POW Number: 129826 Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: VII-A Camp Location: Moosburg an der Isar, Bavaria TD
As suggested by TD send off for his service records via the official route Get a copy of military service records
Elise, sorry for the duff information, coincidence on the similar numbers. That name does not appear in the British Army casualty lists which are about the only WW2 information that is available, so his individual service records are the way to go. Servicemen's medical records are still considered private so are not sent out.
Thanks for checking regardless. Yeh I think I'll see if I can get hold of any records from the national archives.
A recent request for records from the MOD, that due to high demand, it will take around three months to arrive. PS, You won't get any service records from the National archives.
Cool thanks. I do a fair bit of genealogy research but I've never looked at military records before so this is all new (as you can probably tell) haha. Thanks for all the advice.
Once you have his service records [from the MOD] they will tell you which units he was with, when he was with them and where they were, the next step would probably be to find the War Diaries for those units at the times he was with them. These War Diaries (WD or WD's) are kept at The National Archives (TNA) - but you need to know which ones, hence the need for service records. The WD's literally are diaries written up on a day to day basis, and normally the only people named in them would be officers, although NCO's are sometimes mentioned if there was something very specific so dont expect to see your relatives name on every page TD
