Does it mention being in Yeovil in 1940 ?

That would be interesting - is next finding out where my great-uncle served. If he was in fact enlisted by 1940 (as stated in the picture) I'm assuming he would have served some form of action - while we now know he died in 1942 (Carbon monoxide poisoning in Aberdeen).

Did you read the war diaries I posted link to in post #6 ?
That tells you where they were in France in 1940.

No mention of Yeovil but he might have been on a day out from Newbury before sailing to France. Interesting about the kilts too.
Sorry - can't seem to upload them the right way up ..

That's amazing, thank you and everyone else for their help. I now know that the grave in Piershill is him, I'll be sure to visit.

My next task is to discover couple of other family members so I'll add that to the relevant threads.

    Hi

If you are thinking of visiting Cruden Bay the beach is great and the St Olaf should still be a nice place to eat.

Beware the weather can be a bit unpredictable up there.

    Hope this helps

    Gus

Does the RCE page add anything significant?

It isn't available on this record. The original states that he was a plumber by trade and he was found in the Water Pump House.

I'll be visiting his gravestone in Edinburgh soon and then hopefully every Remembrance Sunday from now on.

But it does seem very beautiful up there so I'll be sure to take a visit.

You'd think being on home soil, he'd be safer than away fighting in Europe.

My Grandfather John Ross was a 2nd lieutenant in the 7/9th Royal Scots , the earliest record i have is my mums birth certificate listing him as a private in 1940 , he left service i think in 1946
