    Hello

I'm new to this and have just received my Grandfathers war records through. I also have his Service and Pay Book. From 1944 he was in 180 Workshop and Parks Coy. Prior to this, he was based at Elgin. He died a few years ago and never really talked about it. Please excuse my ignorance in this but its very new to me and I would appreciate any help

Its easier to say what I do know:

    - Signed up on 25th July 1940 for 'duration of the emergency' at Elgin, Morayshire
    - He stayed at Elgin, probably as an army driving instructor and assigned to the training division until 1944
    - during the period of 1940 - 1944, he spent some time at Barlinnie Prison (would that be the 'provost duties' on his record?) possibly guarding Italian POW's
    - He left Elgin in 1944/45 but we're not sure where he went though he did say he'd gone to Normandy and we think he may have been in North Germany. His record shows he was somewhere but I can't decipher the writing, then from there, North West Europe

    - in October 1945, he went to Palestine.
    - He told us he went on the HMT Mauretania
    - I have a photo of the Mauretania with "Mauretania, 28th October 1945, Port Suez"
    - We know he badly injured his knee there and the records show a knee injury on 25th December 1945
    - We believe there was some kind of terrorist attack on the lorry he was driving. Record shows he was "off duty" and "not to blame"

Its not much, but can anyone point me in the right direction please?

    Many thanks

Edit: Service record shows he was in Regimental Police from 20/8/1942 however we are sure he was a driver in Palestine

Hello and welcome to the forum.
If it is not too personal, would you be able to upload his records? I am sure other members will be able to help you-there are a lot of people on here who can decipher them.

    Hi amjamwe,
I know it was a while ago, but did you ever find information on your grandfather's time in Palestine. I'm looking for the same and it looks as though they went out at the same time. Any info would be great
    Thanks
    Iain

Hi Tony56, yes I saw that but was hoping they still received notifications from the site. I'll try a message via conversation. Anything is worth a try at this point. Thanks, Iain
